  1. Bedard had a sleight sophomore slump. It is amazing how productive Bedard was last season considering the trash team around him. Crosby and McDavid had wingers that could bury the puck unlike Bedard during their rookie and sophomore seasons. This season looks like more of the same with Bedard being the best player by far on a crap team.

  2. Kyle Davidson should get fired by next offseason. The Hawks should have gone for some good young guys (eg. pending RFAs) to be part of the current Bedard core, and focus on quality of youth, not quantity. It will be too late if they wait till after Bedard's mega-extension to do so. As for Bedard, he isn't even point-per-game and he can't carry the team out of the basement during his ELC, so he doesn't deserve 8 digits/year in terms of statistics, but the team may be forced to overpay him due to his impact on the team, thus not leaving enough cap space for management to build at least a proper team around him.

I think Bedard deserves something like 8×9-9.5 post-ELC, but the only reason from his perspective to take a team-friendly deal is if ownership fires Davidson, then hires a win-now GM who promises to build a proper team around Bedard, and ownership + management tell Bedard the "surrounding pieces" that they are trying to get through trade/FA. Bedard needs to become Crosby/McDavid- score 100pts/season and carry the team to playoffs in order to get $10-13M AAV, but unfortunately, this is not the level he is in right now.

The cycle should be to draft a star -> build around him -> playoffs -> mega-extension. Do you think the Bolts waited till Stamkos was 28? What about the Avs? Did they wait till MacKinnon was 27-28 in order to finally start building around him? They already won a cup when MacKinnon was only 27!

On the other hand, there are some teams that didn't follow the cycle like what the Sabres did with Jack Eichel and the Islanders with John Tavares in the early 2010s. They didn't give the stars they drafted, who may have already been considered "generational talent" since juniors, proper surrounding pieces, such as the lack of top-line wingers and top-4 defensemen. The Islanders could have tried going for Brent Burns as a defenseman to make plays for Tavares, while getting Marian Gaborik to mentor him. Nope, they didn't! The Isles had to wait till Tavares' 7th season in order to even make the 2nd round + walked for nothing as a UFA in his prime. This could be Bedard by the time he's 25-28, if ownership doesn't fire Davidson and hire a proper win-now GM to keep him happy while encouraging him to think team-first.

And why did all this happen? Because the Hawks shouldn't have "torn down" the entire roster and leave only scraps for Bedard to play! But if this eventually got them Bedard, then that's fair, but once they got geneational talent, they should be using the cap space saved (because Bedard was only making ELC money) on defensemen, on wingers, on depth… and not "tank for a whole next core", because while Levshunov + Frondell will become proper surrounding pieces, they won't be effective until after Bedard's ELC ends! His ELC is only 3 years long, and not 10! If you're relying on these guys to "help" Bedard, then there will be no "discount coupon" management can use on Bedard! He has to make $12M while only scoring 70 points (or less)! Do you call that a good contract, Mr. Davidson?

Moral: tear-down rebuilds are only the beginning of a vicious cycle: tear down team -> draft star -> no surrounding pieces -> star stagnates while team remains in the bottom tier -> star frustrated -> star leaves -> tear down team again

As for GMs like Kyle Dubas and Kyle Davidson, you guys better ask the NHL to make ELCs 10 years long instead of 3. If not, the NHL isn't the place for you to manage a hockey team.

  3. Why would the year where Gavin McKenna is in the draft be the year they NEED to make a massive splash and massively overpay an ok free agent?

  4. The new owner it's a carbon copy of his grandfather the tyrant dollar bill wirtz. Does
Everything on the cheap. You couldn't even watch the blackhawks last year. They weren't on TV at all. They got some crappy t v deal and no cable companies would pick up them up. Which is just like what his grandfather did back in the 80s.When you couldn't watch any games on TV.There had no TV contract, and at 1 year they started the season with no radio either until a tiny FM station picked them up.They're just a ship of fools. History is repeating itself with the sorry a** franchise. Bedard won't even be around on a couple years. They'll trade him or he'll sign somewhere else

  5. CB should take the Happy Gilmore route.
It's basically just him and the Hawks assume he will grow and IMPROVE simply by default.
Regardless of the second rate team mates he has next to him.
He's better off retiring to golf at the end of his ELC or trading out like most Buffalo draft picks
They're likely to be worse next season.
