Tom Dundon is going to own 2 teams that wear black and red
They won’t be leaving Portland so that’s the good part
Selfishly, as someone who just moved to Raleigh a few weeks ago, I’d love to see the Blazers move here.
But also can’t imagine the NBA without the Portland Trail Blazers?!
Weren’t the hurricanes being cheap with resigning players?
Paul Allen did pass away quite a while ago, Patrick Bateman chopped him up with an ax listening to Huey Lewis.
Very good news for the Portland/Vancouver metro area. Brazers have had a very solid fan base from the very beginning of the franchise.
I would definitely 💯 stay in Portland and fix up the stadium
Boltness
I remember in the 1980's when the DeBartolo family simultaneously owned the SF 49ers and Pittsburgh Penguins.
The good news is that Charlotte has a team. The bad news is that the arena where the Blazers play in Portland needs hundreds of millions in renovations. Phil Knight of Nike wanted to buy the team a few years ago but he's too old now. That would've guaranteed them staying in Portland or at least Oregon because Knight is a big Portland guy. While they won't move to North Carolina, they'll be enticed to move to a community that offers to pick up the tab for an arena. I think the state of Oregon/City of Portland are trying to get ahead of this and see if they can do the renovations without the owner having to foot a lot of the bill. Not to mention the optics of Seattle, Vancouver and then Portland losing their teams leaving the Northwest without a team would be incredibly bad for the NBA. We'll see.
Hey Brodie, keep covering the hurricanes. Ok thanks 🌀
Some numbers:
Oregon and SW WA have 4.5 million. 1 basketball team.
SC, NC and VA have 25 million. 1 basketball team (DC counts as a second but you would then add in DCs population).
NC and VA have college basketball royalty – Virginia, Duke, NC and NC State.
Charolette and Raleigh are approximately the same distance as Portland and Seattle.
The canes just signed a 20 year lease and development deal.
Basketball and hockey work well together since you have a fixed asset.
The only way the Blazers will stay is if Oregon/Portland give him an enormous profit.
Building a new stadium in the suburbs will leave the Portland metro with three arenas! Moda is only 30 years old! Building a new facility for billionaires and their millionaire employees every 30, 20 or 10 years will just cause an escalation that municipalities can’t afford. Taxpayers are being extorted.
A way to fix this is to tax owners when they sell or move teams. Leagues can expand into new cities with new teams but they can’t move existing teams without a tax man being present. States and municipalities can’t provide incentives to relocate existing teams. They can provide limited incentives for expansion. Paul Allen purchased the Blazers 40 years ago for $70 million. It was sold for $4.2 billion!
I remember in the 1990's when the last owner of the Hartford Whalers was considering moving that team to Oregon. I also remember during that time when Paul Allen made a bid to bring the Pittsburgh Penguins to Portland.
So hilarious people saying they’d move to the crappier city of Seattle or go east, like yall have zero clue what’s going on and what’s in the deal. They will remodel the moda center in stages and build an entertainment district like he’s doing in Raleigh…if you’ve been to Moda center it’s a great arena so won’t need much to upgrade, Paul Allen made it state of the art when it was built.
Ok, as a Canes fan, I don't want another tenant at Lenovo Center. NC State Men's basketball is the other tenant at the arena.
The arena isn't owned by Tom, it's actually owned by the Centennial Authority of Raleigh.
Also, Lenovo Center will currently being modernized over the next few years alongside the area between the arena and NC State's Carter-Finley Stadium.
I find this a little amusing because Portland and Raleigh are the two non-canadian cities that I think should get a MLB team.
At least he had the decency to leave the team in Portland
I'm interested to see who Jody Allen sells the Seahawks to. Paul Allen was the ideal NFL owner in the sense that he wrote the checks, then stood back and let the football people make the football decisions. I'd love for the next owner to be someone who "knows what (s)he doesn't know", and not interfere with the coaches and GM. Allen just held a minority stake in the Sounders, so that selling won't move their ownership needle appreciably.
30 years old being the 7th oldest arena for basketball is a really interesting fact. Had no idea that basketball arenas updated more frequently than that!
@brodiebrazil
Technically, North Carolina State plays basketball at the Lenovo Center, so whereas I understand that its not as many games as an NBA season, he does have a basketball team already at the arena in Raleigh
How come there’s no thoughts on the fact that this man was going to fully invest in the alliance of American football and then, as soon as the NFL made things a little bit hard on him, he took his money and ran and folded the entire league midseason
PORTLAAAAAAND, WE NOW OWN THE TRAILBLAZERSSSSS
PLEASE COME TO OUR GAAAAAMMMEEEESSSSSSSSSSSS ~Tom Dundon, probably
Moda center is dated but you wouldn’t have to gut it to make it modern. The buildings in good shape… just gotta give it a major modern facelift
If anything, he needs to fix the Rose Garden/Moda Center. It's still a perfectly good NBA arena, it just needs some fixing and renovations.
Trail Blazers GOVERNOR? Whats that?? Is that the cool kids term for owner?
I'm not going to say that there is zero chance that the Blazers won't move, but it's verrrry unlikely. As for Raleigh, there are three – count 'em – 3 – high profile NCAA basketball teams that eat up a lot of disposable income already. And then there are the struggling Hornets down the freeway in Charlotte. Another NBA team in NC makes ZERO sense…BTW, Mr. Dundon apparently lives on his jet, which he parks in Dallas. He doesn't even own a house in Raleigh. Dundon Capital Partners is in Dallas, and that's his cash cow…Move along everybody. Nothing to see here…
The Thunder owners said they had no plan to move the Sonics either, so…
If they move to Raleigh, they have to call the team the Carolina Reapers!
Would North Carolina even be a feasible market for 2 NBA teams? While I don't think a relocation is remotely possible, the biggest hurdle for Trailblazers to Raleigh would be a Charlotte Hornets territorial claim: any such relocation, if even allowed by the NBA Governors and the Hornets, would incur a hefty, hefty "invasion fee" above and beyond the relocation fee.
No one had the “decency” to stay in Portland. There is no initial plans to move before ownership inspects along with the NBA the Moda center. If the team doesn’t feel it has a partner in the city or state don’t be surprised for a quick movie down the line
Owning NBA and NHL teams in different markets is not unprecedented. Look at the Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils. (Half of that ownership group also owns the NFL Washington Commanders, and I believe was in pursuit of the MLB NY Mets at some point).
Dundon is making a mistake. There is a reason that three teams are selling out now. Jody Allen can read the tea leaves ( and notice there is no rush to sell her other teams). The NBA is due for a big fall because of the unsustainable amount of salaries being paid and a player culture that is not about winning or caring about local fans but collect a big pay check and then at any opportunity demand to be traded. Baseball and football players are not saints, but the culture of the NBA and its players are totally opposite that of The NHL and its players.
Fans are leaving as attendance is dropping and TV ratings have gone in the toilet in 2025. The networks owning the TV contracts are going to be losing millions if not billions of dollars down the road and will likely exercise exit clauses or demand as ESPN did with MLB a reset at lower prices. And this time there will be nobody itching to get in as a replacement.
Rip City Forever 🌹🌲🏀
If this the new owner wants a new arena let him build it!!! If portland tax payer don't need new taxes!! IT will not being the ticket price down and you will now be paying $50.00 for a beer and hotdog, why metro portland is on the hook? portland got ripoff on the moda center the last time!!~
He might as well move the team, everybody else is leaving Portland the home of the homeless the land of the fentanyl junkies
TopGolf is a bad investment. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HxOgo6o6hlY
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFs4bmiI_-8&t=3s
I’m sure before the team moves they’ll give the city an ultimatum build a new arena or we’re gone.
Speaking as a former Seattle Sonics fan and resident and now Portland resident, i'm really curious now with the push to bring a team back to Seattle that there would be some inside action among the super rich who have the spare change laying around to buy teams of this value if there isn't some kind of leveraging of internal contractual small print stuff
1:24 Paul’s brother 😅
9:18: Dundon does not own the Lenovo Arena. He has a management company that manages the facility but it is owned by an authority associated with North Carolina State University. that was formed DECADES ago. NC State ( basketball) is also a tenant and it is ludicrous to think that three sports teams can co exist in one arena, all playing in effectively the same seasons. He is not moving to Raleigh.
Seattle Trailblazers lol
You renovate the moda center.. And you keep it there for concerts.. And the wnba team… Then you completely redesign the lloyd center district, tear the mall and the movie Theater out and build a new stadium there!…. Complete with new bars, new restaurants and hotels surrounding the entire area..
