Suivez mon Twitter: https://x.com/oakley22610

Great video, Ben! Only thing I found confusing is you referred to February of ‘97 as February of ‘96, and you referred to the ‘97-‘98 season as the ‘97 season (I think of the ‘97 season as ‘96-‘97). Small nitpick in an otherwise amazing video as usual. I’m looking forward to seeing you cover the late ‘90s and 2000s Maple Leafs. They never got over the hump, but in some cases, they got close.
Good stuff boss I asked for more long for leafs and you have been answering ever since and it’s working. Keep it coming, be nice if you could get away with more footage of actual games but YouTube is youtube
Ps who the hell is Jamie baker lol I was 12 and I don’t remember him at all
When are you gonna do a video on the Islanders? We have a long history of losing and disappointment too!
This is the best hockey channel on YouTube by a mile. Gonna be unfortunate when you get too big to use highlights…you’ll still kill it though the commentary is fantastic
Blame Treleving ! MapleKnobs are managed like a Boston pizza franchise
Love these Ben. Collab with pinholes on a Caps/pens rivalry video!
Great video. Been Leafs fan from 91. It was painful to watch Leafs losing to St. Louis in 1st round. They had a great team though. My first Leafs LIVE game was that Leafs version.
I love the fact Murphy went on to win 2 cups. All analytics said he was a bad D man. He was playing the wrong system and wrong partners.
Todd Gill was a beauty
I’m not a Leafs fan but I just want to say you’re doing a fantastic job with these videos.
Peak video as always 🙏
Good stuff Ben.
31:08 jumpscare for sabres fans. Be careful.
Really hope this goes up to the 04 lockout
"Larry Murphy […] is a cancer that's destroying the team fabric from within. He isn't even worthy of trying to fetch a good return for! Detroit, you want him?! Here, take him! Just take him!! We'll even eat the majority of his salary remaining on his contract, just GET HIS ASS THE FUCK OUT OF HERE!!! HOW'S THAT FOR A MURPHY DUMP?!?!?!"
have you ever thought about doing a video on appreciating backup goalies? guys who were career backups for a long time and were always very good but never really a starter?
13:50 Felix be like:
"Call an ambulance, call an ambulance!…*but not for me*"
theres plenty of content for videos on the disaster that was the mid to late 90s islanders
The Leafs have not been much fun to watch since they were eliminated in 2004.
The 2013 choke wasn't a one-off. It was a preview of the AM34 era in the playoffs.
The 2017 playoffs were fun to watch. Every other year? Not so much. Losing to Boston two years in a row, the Montreal choke, the CBJ choke in which the Leafs didn't even make the playoff quarterfinals, a middling TB series, finally a first round followed by a terrible second round v FLA, another loss to BOS, a decent series V OTT (except Game 5, which was awful) and 2.5 good games v FLA before they stopped playing hockey entirely.
It's been over two decades since fans have felt confident in this team. In the hours leading up to a Leafs playoff game, all I can think is "will the Leafs who care show up tonight or the ones who don't?"
That's a huge problem.
I have way more fun going back and watching these seasons. The Leafs under the two Pats (I'd call them the Saint Pats but that would be too confusing) were actually fun to watch.
3:36 – Well, the 1996 NHL draft was the weakest of the 1990's and its only future big star was Zdeno Chara (56th pick, 3rd round) by Islanders. The rest of this draft became mediocre NHL level tallent with Daniel Brière as a better selection from the rest. Marco Sturm, Tomas Kaberle, Pavel Kubina and Samuel Pahlsson all had fine careers in the NHL, but nothing above mediocre levels.
Regardless, I read Mats Sundin's biography a few months ago and he could not grasp how there Leafs just fell off a cliff un 1996 and could not bounce back (?)
How he felt it was wrong of the team to put false blame on Larry Murphy, a proven elite level defender, and how they traded away fan-loved Doug Gilmour and others for nothing equal in return.
1997 & 1998 Sundin grew frustrated behind the scenes that the Leafs never aquired solid players to help them build a contender.
Not till summer of 1998 things really changed with Pat Quinn and the biold for there great 1999 season.
Wait wait WAIT !!!!!! They didn't go undefeated ????????
Hate the Leafs, but I really enjoy these videos. 👍
you should do a video talking about the Capitals 98 cup run. i know we got flat lined by an emotionally driven Detroit team, and i respect that, even to this day). That playoff run was sweet, though. i was 9 so i was over excited at that time😅
16:20 , sounds familiar (marner)
I would enjoy seeing a video on the long list of goalies who have come and gone, but were all supposed to be the guy who would deliver the Leafs to the promised land. In my view, that started at Felix Potvin and the few dozen who have since come and gone.
this is a bunch of baloney . i watched through the 80s and 90s since i was born 1974 ,. Gilmour trade was amzing probably the best we goit screwed by the ref it be toronto montreal final and we owned montreal that year and would of won the cup. Fletcher was amazing . and getting sundin was a great move
Looks to be another great series, Ben! Loving these and your music recently. Keep up the amazing work.
I continue to blame Harold Ballard
Leaf fans were expecting too much from Larry Murphy. They wanted him to be a stud D, and he was not that at this stage of his career. He was the scapegoat because he was quiet, unassuming, and didn't have a long history with the club.
The Leafs teams during this era were such a big disappointment. And on top of the disappointment on the ice, we had to deal with the Luongo pick. That pick hurt almost as bad as the Niedermayer pick.
This is amazing and depressing to see at the same time lol. I'm not a leafs fan but I'm just annoyed by poor management in sports 😂
Larry Murphy was a +1 on that Leafs team. Dude, he was a god.
I LOVE this series so far !! Been a Leafs fan since around this timeline. awesome work!
I am so incredibly excited to see the rest of this series. Amazing work. Immediate like and subscribe. Kudos 👏.
