  1. My issue is.. I am not an Apple person. I could not care less to watch because its on their platform. I try to avoid all things Apple. I love the MLS… but i won't watch it on that platform.

  2. Formula 1 has been making inroads on The US. They just signed to have Apple TV carry F1 races on that streamer starting next season. My intyition say that F1's growth will stall after seeing how well MLS on Apple has gone.

  3. Unfortunately the Apple deal has turned MLS from a sports league to a streaming product. That’s why we have the stupid Leagues Cup and the ridiculous playoff format. And I am pretty sure they were instrumental in putting Messi and friends in Miami.

  4. The biggest issue is had with the Apple TV deal, was it ripped away the personalized broadcast by teams. In Seattle they had a great broadcast and great personalities along with a good TV deal to wear we could watch our team for free on regular TV. Now we get a cool looking TV broadcast but very little knowledgeable commentary on the team itself.

  5. loved LA FC. Haven't seen a game since it went on Apple. This is the 5th best league in the world. They should play on NBC after EPL (by far the best league with the best players). Washed up stars like Messi and KDB play in MLS. This is like arguing who has the best Single A or Winter Baseball squad. Best American athletes play sports you can make money in

  6. Nothing so far as I know prevents Apple, if their media rights are exclusive, to "farm" them out to whoever is willing to pay for them. In other words, Apple need not be the actual broadcaster– they're also the syndicator (remember "syndication"?). I could see them selling off a sold-out game or two per market during the course of the season. More than that? I have no idea. You don't want to "give away" your product more than you need to, so they'd need to figure out how many games on other-than-FS1 cable or free-to-air they think won't hurt them.

As for YouTube carriage– since effectively that would be an on-demand product as far as concluded games, would anyone watch live? How would that be monetized? I don't want Messi shooting and have an ad for some boner pill come on right at that moment!

  7. I love what MLS Season Pass offers but it should just be on Apple TV as opposed to being behind its own paywall as MLS Season Pass. I don’t know a single person in my generation who watches linear TV. Paying for a few subscriptions is the equivalent of paying for a broadcast tv package and way more convenient with no long contracts. The issue of being behind this paywall is real, but we’ve forgotten how poor coverage was on linear television before. These traditional sports broadcasters did nothing to promote or help mls grow. And while I still think Apple isn’t doing enough, they have thrown tremendous money at the league and helped raise the profile of the league internationally. People are calling for MLS to go back to what wasn’t working before and I just don’t think it will really change much. Having the play offs not be behind a paywall is a good start this year in my opinion

  8. Bad move if it's on Apple; you lose the Android market. Not to say those who will not subscribe to x number of streaming package to watch sports. what should be FREE TV or at least cable channels.

  9. Absolutely not. MLS if they want to be more popular can’t be gate kept behind a pay wall. It needs to be on regional sports networks so casual viewers can catch it

  10. I watched every Portland Timbers game before the Apple deal now i only watch them in person. MLS chased money instead of natural growth, they're gonna get what they deserve

  11. The leaguebdoesnt shoe thier stars in Commercials hardly anyone know whos who thats not counting Messi

  12. Thankfully the MLB is moving the exclusive Friday Night games from Apple TV to maybe Peacock & NBC Sports. MLB has an older demographic so fans would prefer their games on more accessable channels & streaming services. The MLS is a newer league & probably has a younger democratic. The younger democratic might have iphones & might get a free trial subscription to Apple TV.

  13. Apple could have an app that is just for MLS with Apple product ads in the app and streams to gain exposure for themselves as well as providing games for free and also local broadcast rights with a 50/50 split on ads, Apple could promote itself and allow local broadcasters to provide games for free to locals. It would give people the chance to follow their hometown soccer team all season

  14. New Jerseyan here.
    – 1. Personally, I think Apple TV made a mistake signing a 10 year deal with MLS.
    – 2. I for one will not go to a MLS soccer match because the New York Red Bulls physically play in the Town of Harrison, Hudson County, New Jersey, and why the team is not called the NEW JERSEY Red Bulls is beyond me.
    – 3. There is only ONE MLS team in New York State. The New York City Football Club.
    🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️

  15. Brodie, owners expressed discontent with Apple earlier this season. Apple has whispered their own discontent.

More important, there’s an option to pull out of the contract halfway through. Remember MLS all but saying they’re going to a fall-to-spring schedule? The perfect time to do that is after next year’s World Cup. However, MLS has clearly been targeting the following year for that, and I suspect that syncs with the opening of the opt-out period. So Apple may not be a problem too much longer.

Which begs the next question. If this is true, is Fox picking up all $60M per year the league pays Lionel Messi? Or is there another solution to that? I mention Fox because at least one analyst and former player has asserted for some time that Fox wanted to shift the MLS schedule.

  16. I was lucky enough that Tmobile gave me appletv free for life and gave me MLS free for a year but I usually just use free online streams for all sports, but not everyone knows how to find those and they aren't 100% perfect (sometimes there's a lot of buffering)

  17. Honestly….this was a deal they HAD to do, not necessarily they wanted to do.They NEEDED the money, despite it being getting less fans.

  18. DOES MLS + APPLE WORK FOR THE CASUAL FAN?

  19. IMO MLS should have local teams on local tv and all other matches on Apple TV or other streamer. When the product is “out of sight, out of mind” maybe Apple can sub license local matches to local channels especially Spanish channels. MLS needs more stars even if they are former big stars in Europe. Look how Son is doing at LAFC or Messi at Inter Miami.

  20. Putting it on “YouTube” is a bad idea. US Open Cup was free on YouTube for years… and a few hundred would watch a match. YouTube is too cluttered unless you have Google pushing it to the front.

  21. Basically to summarize:
    – MLS accepted a bag of enough money up front from apple for exclusivity to their leauge.. making MLS profitable

    – By doing so.. they capped their MESSI momentum to a society of MLS enthusiasts & the above curious. (How does a casual gain interest into paying to view a leauge that's out of sight out of mind? Despite having an International Superstar making Magic)

    – at some point apple is going to tell the truth on the lack of MLS driven paid subscribers as this deal will be terminated before the end (as in NOT PROFITABLE)

    – MLS will be left reeling as they would have wasted Lionel Messi's time here.. 5-7 YEARS THEY WILL NEVER GET BACK!

A leauge like the WNBA would have folded if they had followed this model with Caitlin Clark!

  22. Japan's J1 League streams 2 games a week on their international Youtube channel, while the German's stream all their Friday games on their Youtube channel, one from the Bundesliga and NINE from the Bundesliga 2. (Basically, all of the Bundesliga 2 football is free!)
I don't know if they are available in the USA (I'm from Ireland), but if those soccer leagues can stream free games on Youtube, the MLS can as well.
Nice to see some soccer news for once. Love your work.

  23. I seriously wonder if USL eventually passes MLS in being the top US top flight soccer division, especially after they add promotion & relegation.

  24. Every sport that needs to grow faces the same question: take the money and go behind a paywall or take less and try to get more eyeballs. In Europe, rugby faces the same conundrum, and to some extent, so does cricket. In the US, other minor sports like rugby, arena football, and lacrosse face the same problem. I don't think anyone's found the right answer.
