I know it's early, but he's currently on pace for 60 points, and I hope he doesn't even hit that. After a decade of the Leafs thinking they're contenders it's going to be hilarious seeing them miss the playoffs this year.
Auston Matthews has not looked right since the beginning of last season. He can't generate anything. His shot is gone. When was the last time he scored from 10-15 feet out? He doesn't look dangerous at all. All these comments about Marner, they are not without some merit, but there is a fundamental problem with Matthews himself.
Matthew’s misses Marner who carried the mail and delivered it. Now he has to carry it and is vulnerable. Remember all the media wanting Marner gone. How do you let a 100pt guy walk and get nothing in return and expect to be as good. Sure Marner wan not a great playoff player but who on the leafs have been, maybe besides JT and or Knies ?
Rebuild
Dude scored 40 or at a 40+pace without Mitch for years – Babcock refused to play them together. He scored 47 with Kapanen and Johanssen as his wingers. This isn’t about Auston needs Mitch. It’s something else. Is his wrist still an issue? Is it between the ears? Something is off beyond Marner being gone.
He gets paid a lot of money to not have difficulty playing with new linemates.
My guess is chronic injuries that will only get worse as he enters the back end of his career.

This is not a playoff team period. Management needs to see this and mske a plan for the future. I would have one on ones with every player,tell them we're going into a rebuild and if they want a trade we can do it,even the guys with no trade deals. Give a list of teams. The Leafs will have to eat salary, for the year, not beyond that but you can get better returns and BTW, it's only draft picks and no lottery protected picks. You don't want those picks for next year, the year after that then with the spare Cao you take on other teams about taking on three one year left bad contracts for more picks. This team needs to draft along the 4s rule Size,speed,skill,sandpaper. Every player has to have some of those 4 qualities in varying percentages. Fa e it This team as it's built is slow and not a winner.

That means, in the remaining 8 games they’ve played, they’ve scored at least 3. Winning games 3-2, 3–1 or 3–0 is something good NHL teams find ways to do but so far this regular season the Leafs have allowed under 3 goals in just 2 games, with 5–2 and 2–1 respective wins over the Habs and NY Rangers (the latter in OT). As much as M 34 may have had problematic play so far this regular season, issues the Leafs have go WAY beyond just him. The Leafs have a 5–5–1–0 win-regulation loss-OT loss-shootout loss record after 11 relevant games but just 3–5–1–0 when 3 has been the minimum number of goals they have allowed. If the lack of defensive awareness isn’t reason for there to be a need for a massive shake-up of various lines, IDK what does. Maybe it’s time to healthy-scratch 1 or 2 players to send as strong a message as possible that such poor play can’t go on.

The lines are juggled way too much. I agree about the basic mistakes made. They make mistakes that minor league players don’t make. Don’t pass in front of your own net, if the D rush cover him, cover the points etc.
Matthews is just fine. +3 with 2GWG and an OT goal. Yes, two empty netters, but he is doing ok. The defense is the problem right now.

Matthews will never be above 50 goals again for the rest of his career. It's not a Marner issue, it's a shot and effort issue. I don't know if it's a permanent wrist issue or what, but he can no longer beat goalies clean any more and his shot accuracy is far worse than it used to be. As a Leafs fan, I hate to admit this, but it is reality.
