  1. This was very touching but definitely required more finance than just a will and passion.

I remember a story out of the Canadian prairies where there's a rink that sits underground and players have to descend stairs to the rink itself. Very unassuming building that looks more like a barn but actual hockey games are played there.

  2. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr LaFontaine at his house in Lloyd Harbor Long Island a few years ago.I was a cable tech and he was having issues. After I fixed the problem outside I HAD to knock and let them know it was good. Pat answered the door and he was awesome. He offered me a $50 tip. I declined telling him he was a hero of mine. He then retrieved a bottle of his vineyards wine and signed it.

  3. I remember back a ways when he was doing a signing at Kings Park High School on the north shore of the Island, early nineties. He was there with Craig Biggio Houston Astro great who went to that school. We were in the parking lot after the event as he was waiting for his wife to pick him up and we were just shooting the breeze for like 10 minutes. He could not have been any nicer. Great guy.

  4. For many years back in Ontario I played pickup hockey outside every chance I could on the river across the road from my parents’ house, on frozen ponds and backyard rinks. It was wonderful!

  5. No other sport touches people the way Hockey does. Im 39, started my journey at 38. Started watching religiously at 36. Daughter made her first team this year as starting goalie. I play pickup and hopefully first league next season. I wish everyone got into hockey. Not just for the sport but for who it surrounds you with. There is not a better group of people than those that live and breathe hockey. It's just different. They way I look at, the people involved in hockey are some of the most genuine/down to earth good people that are standing on this earth. Tried to find the words this whole post, but there are none. It's just….hockey life.

  6. I grew up as a Habs fan in Montreal. Pat LaFontaine is one of the greatest players of all time and I always wished he was on our team.

  7. What happened to pats career is tragic. He was a great player and and even better human being. Always wanted a chance to meet him and sit down and talk hockey / life

  8. A kid I grew up playing hockey with was on the Diaper Line with Pat on the 1984 Olympic Team, David Jensen

  9. Is is so trange when you grew up in Sweden and played all those NHL games and all those players are old now. It is very hard to take it in

  10. These stories are great to hear. I never met Pat, but was a foot away from my favorite hockey player of all time, Bobby Nystrom. I just got into tv prod after college as utility grip at the Nassau Coliseum before becoming a cameraman back in the early to mid-90s working Sports Channel games.

I wanted to introduce myself to Bob but wouldn't dare interrupt his conversation. All I remember was him talking about his flight that night to Utah to watch his son's minor league game the following night.

No regrets, I wish I could've spoken with Mr. Nystrom, but I was raised better than that. I was 6' 1 and 215 lbs back then, taller and heavier than Bob. Immediately, I had even more respect for him, giving up height and weight to most of his opponents. Yet Thor never back down to anyone!

The '80 – '83 NY Islanders are the greatest team in NHL history. 19 straight playoff series victories, absolutely astonishing!

Seeing Clark Gillies, Bobby Nystrom and Pat LaFontaine playing these games on a childhood like dream setting was amazing!
