My expectations for this season are hopeful but are not really that high. Last summers' additions hit early and maybe hid some flaws on this team that need eventual fixing. Playoffs would be nice but it (IMO) is all about the future.
I am excited for and expect a few things. First, Martone to get signed and have a solid rookie year. Something he can build on.
I expect Luchanko to make the team next fall BUT ONLY IF they have the right spot open for him. It's either a center spot on the top 3 lines or he should spend at least a few months in LV as a top 6 center.
My first real litmus test for the rebuild is an infusion of young prospect talent on the Phantoms and that talent competing for a Calder Cup immediately. Kinda like when Carter and Richards and Co. helped the Phantoms win it all in Philly way back when.
I look forward to the journey.
I cant remeber last time flyers went without 10 game losingstreak, feels like its been for 8-9 years in a row like from Hakstol area.. glad it stay for 6 this season. Glad for Ers
What did I watch? Holy F was that ugly. Matvei looked like he does not want to play hockey. The inability to clear the zone was hilarious. They kept passing up shots in favor of a pass. Sloppy passing. Bad penalties. Somehow the PK goes 1 for 7. TK powers up and gets 2 goals. Sammy stands on his head channeling his inner Patrick Roy.
Hard work, Sam played so well nice to see Go Flyers go great win boys 😊
Who knew Bobby Brink was that important to this team
That's the Sammy we've seen before and hope he goes on a nice run here again. The whole team played awesome last night. Konecny was on fire! Special teams looked solid..Great win! Thanks for the recap Jason! 👍👍As to your question about my expectations for this team this year, I think back to the NJ cup runs. Athough they had Brodeur in goal, Steven's, Niedermayer on D and although they had Elias, Richer, Lemieux, they weren't all that offensively talented, it was their defensive structure, hard work and determination that won those cups..and again Brodeurs play of course…I'm not downplaying that NJ team at all, but I know that I dont want to see that style of play every night ever again lol, I'm just saying that they proved that with HARD work game in game out you can also go pretty far without a ton of talent. I have no doubt that the Flyers can maybe win a round or two if theyre all healthy, they find that sweet spot as a unit and work extra hard every game with Vladar also playing well. Another thing is that I believe Tocchet is absolutely the right coach for this team because if there's one thing I've learned from watching Tocchet play, its believing you will win through effort, determination and HARD work every shift. I cant think of a better guy to look up to if I was on that team.
I apologize for the long winded reply Jason lol. Guess we all just want to see our team win again. Flyers make the playoffs, win round 1. God bless! 👍
Errson finally played his second good game of the season
I expect the Flyers to continue to be in purgatory and it’s frustrating. Ok, they don’t want to tank and instead want to build a winning culture. Fine. Then be aggressive in trades or free agency to get the pieces the team needs to be a real cup contender. But so far Breier has remained on the sidelines, Andersson the latest example. So I have to ask, what are we doing?? Like I said, it’s frustrating!
Isn’t Marner a RW and not a C? Regardless, I agree with your point. Players become available for many different reasons – discontent, injury, FA, etc. The main thing is Danny needs to be ready to pounce immediately when they become available.
If the team makes the playoffs, I'll be happy with the progress. Even that might be too much to expect with Foerster out. I'd like to see more from Michkov after the break.
Don't forget Jack Berglund! Good show!
Even with all of the missing pieces to be a true contender, I still expect this to be a borderline playoff team if they get competent goaltending. Worst case scenario is finishing with the 14th-16th pick and we don't get significant individual player improvement. It's been a mixed bag for individual player improvement so far. Drysdale and Andrea have taken significant jumps. The newcomers have all been good although Dvorak is struggling since signing the extension. Barkey being ready earlier than expected is definitely a bonus. TK and Sanheim have been as good as we expect them to be. Cates, Brink, and York seem to have plateaued after promising starts. Tippett is playing a more complete game but trending towards similar total points from previous years. And Michkov's struggles have been talked about ad nauseam. Here's hoping they all finish the season strong and we get to see some long overdue home playoff games.
It's funny my expectations for the season are actually the same as they've ever been I always assume that if the flyers started competing for playoffs this season and next season that the expectation would become that next season they have to make playoffs. The team assembled is certainly good enough to make playoffs in the Metro however with the certain performance of key players like michkov, and the goaltending and power play I just don't see it happening and if they do it'll be very short. Next year we add martone and pick up a goalie and maybe make a hockey trade and I think the expectation has to be that we will be in the playoffs and be able to compete in the first round.
Loved seeing that from Sam. He's got it in him. Great win.
I think the Flyers are getting there, but still a ways to go. They need better goaltending for one, yes Vladar has been good but is he, like the team, punching a bit above their weight class? When the Flyers were 7th in league power ranking by no means did i believe that. Love that they are buying in and playing well but we need a few more additions (1D, 1C) before i expect playoffs. That being said im enjoying watching! I dont have gripes, since Danny was hired i set my high expectations for the 2026/2027 season. Next year we better have more pieces in place, until then ill just put my feet up and enjoy the wins as they come.
Another boring, grind it out win that was extremely boring to watch. They have, on average, like 1-2 odd man rushes a game. I don’t understand what the purpose of all this is, other than to get destroyed in the playoffs in 5 games and get two games of gate revenue. No, this is not a ‘let Michkov do whatever he wants’ response. However, I would like to see more emphasis on playing the young kids (under 25) to focus on player development and find out who is going to be part of this rebuild going forward.
Every game is winnable when you play the right way!!
Hard work and a good win
Let's Go Flyers
I still think the Flyers can make the playoffs as long as they play hard and work
Jason, did you really just ask Philadelphia Flyers fans to look at the team objectively as a whole? Are you high? Lol to do that it requires patience, level-headedness, and understanding nuance. Those are not the words I would use to describe the majority of this fan base lol
Expectations for me this year is seeing improvement and development in each of their games to eventually get back into being a playoff contnder and a touch out in the playoffs. I had them being a bubble team this year on the outside looking in. I am eager to see the development of their youth. There are signs of brilliance that they can be that team from some of the wins they has, but the consistency needs to be there night in and night out which isnt there yet but will eventually come. Never stop improving is the key.
There's more a likely chance of drafting Gavin McKenna than winning a playoff series.
Correction…Marner is NOT a center, and never has been at the NHL. He'll never be a center…? But the point remains the same, you can get guys via trade. The problem is, Vegas has a PROVEN history of aggressive trading, Danny B? Literally nothing but convenience trades to rid salary, he has yet to make a big hockey trade that benefits the organization, that he wasn't hand-cuffed on, or forced to make. Swing already, and big…
My expectations are the exact same now as they were going into the season.
I expected they would marginally improve. I expected that they would sniff the playoffs or barely get in. I expected that they would be a 1st round exit if they did get in.
I did not expect MM39 to regress but there is still time. I hope he uses the break wisely. I’m not one of those who thinks he’s a lost cause I’m just a little miffed that he came in out of shape. I’m sure he was told during his exit interview that he needs to work on speed, especially fast twitch initial step, he clearly did not.
I expected coots to improve upon last year uhhh I guess time will tell. I don’t think he’s having a terrible year, I really think his production is a result of his inconsistent linemates. I will never put down a guy who plays responsible hockey like he does, ok some occasional 💩y turnovers but I can live with that.
I had no expectations of Vladar so he is a very pleasant surprise as is Z.
I expected Ersson to be on par with last season if not marginally better so this has been a disappointment. I wonder if mentally the is having a hard time knowing he clearly lost the starting position.
My expectations may still be the same but just a different way of getting there.
And…..to all of the twixter experts out there that I constantly block and mute because I’ve had enough….we are not firing Taco any time soon. He is doing a dam good job with what he has to work with and we certainly wouldn’t be in the hunt without him.
Jason, address how bad Coots has been. Both on and off the ice.
I expect The Flyers to miss the playoffs for at least 6 more seasons. I don't think Luchanko or Nesbitt will be impact players. Don't see anyone drafted after the 1st round doing anything. Think Martone will be a decent but disappointing player.
Think Tocchet will be here through 2027-28 but after 3 seasons of missing the playoffs he will be canned. Think Briere will be here until around 2030 but again after never making the playoffs he gets canned. Beyond that it is hard to tell.
My expectations were and still are that the Flyers barely make the playoffs as 2nd wc and then get demolished by the top seeded team that we face in the first round. Tough to take but it will indicate progress.
1. That tweet. Sure, you can trade for a dynamic top of the lineup player, but you cannot do that without giving up something in return. If you aren't willing to part with players you've drafted and "developed" for upper echelon talent, then you'll constantly miss the boat and be left in the cold. They need to realise that their best chance to add this level of dynamic skill is to part ways with a Michkov, Martone or Foerster. What is the point of drafting BPA if you don't eventually understand you have a stockpile of something you can use to get something you need?
2. The problem i have with that "big picture" email is that they, through their mixed-messaging, have made that end goal so cloudy and murky that you can't even see what it is. Michkov is a foundational piece but they've handled him (for the sake of the arguement) questionably. You claim you're rebuilding but you just signed a 30 year old to a 5 year contract. You're saying the bottoming out is over but you still don't have any foundational pieces at Center, Goalie or D from any of those drafts. You told everyone you've cleared out all this cap to do something this summer but all the talent has basically left the market. You claim the culture turnover is complete but some of the exact same issues are present year after year (awful PP, the long, painful losing streaks, inconsistent efforts on a game-by-game basis). What is the goal, actually? The reasons i listed above are only a small list, but there are more questions than answers, and that is what leaves even the average fan questioning what they're even doing here.
