  1. Feels like the flames have 3 teams worth of fringe defensemen at the moment. As much as it would’ve been great to have him in the lineup over bean, guys like solovyov are a dime a dozen. Calgary can just claim someone if they ever end up just needing bodies on left D. Wish Solo well though, hope he crushes it in Pittsburgh

I think this is a lesson on over valuing fringe players. If you’re a defensive prospect in the AHL, are approaching 25 years old, and can’t outplay players like Hanley, Bean, and Miromanov for a roster spot your ceiling as a player is probably pretty low. While there are late bloomers, most players in this position are lucky to be bottom pairing defense men at the NHL level for a few years.

If we had kept Solovyov, Kuznetsov would not have gotten his chance.

Do we still get first rights if his new team (PIT) puts him on waivers to send him down to the minors?

It’s interesting that COL would rather have healthy-scratched him for most of the first half of the season rather than risking putting him on waivers and giving him playing time in the minors. Shows me they valued him enough not to lose him for nothing in a waiver claim.
