Bunkis nailed it on Leafs Talk, if you were booing and then suddenly decided to cheer for the tribute, you have some explaining to do. The past 24 hours have proven how much this organization has alienated this team from its fans.
From every leafs players saying this is “just a game” or hoping Marner got a “warm reception” it just shows how out of touch these guys are with their own fans. No you don’t publicly shame marner in your presser, but you could simply say “we’re gonna try and send the fans home happy cause we know it’s gonna be an emotional one tonight”. Vegas looked like a team that knew this wasn’t ‘just a game’, they went out there and uplifted their teammate.
You have a guy whose foot was out the door years before his contract was up and there’s people in this city who believe fans shouldn’t boo? Are we being for real? Any real sports city would’ve gave Marner the JT treatment that he got in Long Island.
This team, this organization straight up doesn’t care and it’s completely rubbed off on the core guys here. Matthews didn’t speak with the media before or after the game. That’s your captain who’s supposed to represent the city and its fans, showing you what he thinks of this game and how flawed that approach is. Even if you think it’s ‘just one game’ we desperately need 2 points right now and that start was unacceptable any night. I’m so disgusted and embarrassed by this team.

I like that the fans knew well enough to give Marner a moment of respect for his years of service. For years we saw Islanders fans completely shit on Tavares’ legacy and many of us felt it was classless, petty and stupid because it is.
Give the boy his dues for the 9 years and move on. That’s what the cheering and booing is about. If you don’t get that, you have some growing up to do or you’ll be a miserable fuck forever.
I feel like this was good closure on Marner’s part. Classy move by leafs fans to recognize his work even if not successful, sprinkled in with some boos is not surprising and pretty normal. He did his best. His mentality wasn’t truly suited for the Leafs environment even though he grew up dreaming about it, it just happens.
I think we can move on now from this.
We only have to worry or care about him for 2 games a year plus possible Stanley cup finals which would just make for entertainment value anyways.

People… He played enough games, put up enough points, to at least deserve respect during the video. After that boo him for the rest of time but let’s not act like he wasn’t deserved a 30 second applause
Personally I feel like if he’s playing on the ice for another team, you are allowed to be bummed that he left and you have a right to boo.
Alternatively, during the video tribute when he is being recognized for his on ice accomplishments for the leafs, then it seems appropriate to acknowledge his impact and applaud in recognition.
Fuck Mitch Marner. He played exactly how you expect him to play in a big game. He was a no show. His boys picked him up. Eichel/Stone/Hertl. Marner was Mr. perimeter and handled the puck like a hot potato all night.
Fuck this guy. He is absolute horseshit. To the Leafs, what a god damn embarrassment. In a game where you have to win because the playoffs look more daunting everyday. Because this puke who quit on the team and left town was back. Because the fans really wanted a big win. This Fucken Leafs team always disappoint. I did hear some boo’s during Mitch’s tribute video but I’m a little surprised he got a better welcoming than Sundin did.
I booed everytime he touched the puck and during the tribute. Fuck him. $11 million dollar victim.
I dont know, I was booing and so were alot of people. Its as if they are nitpicking who they show in this video.

He deserves the boos. He fucked the team at the trade deadline last year, knowing he was going to walk at the end of the season. Now instead of Rantanen, we have Nick Roy. Thanks Mitch!

My favourite thing was that sign in the crowd that said « Thanks Mitch for 9 incredible regular seasons. » Such an S tier troll.
Whether Mitch is a good person or not, or tried his hardest as a leaf or not is somewhat irrelevant here. The video is to highlight his accomplishments as a leaf – and the dude with the sign said it best – they are during the regular season. He failed to show up when it counted most. Is he alone in that? I’d say no…but for this and what he commanded (demanded) salary wise, I think fans have every right to boo. Now…making custom « sellout » jerseys, threatening him/his family online, etc is taking it so far beyond « I disliked his contributions as a leaf and I’m going to boo for 5-10 seconds ». Far too many apologists for Mitch here.
I was at the game, boo’d every time he touched the puck, but stood up and cheered for his tribute.
I was there to witness the booing, and cheering, for whenever he left the ice. It was obnoxious and reminded me of the treatment, in some degree, that JT faces against the Islanders. Embarrassing.
Then the tribute, and suddenly the crowd is split.
I was glad to be there, like I always am, at the bitter end. Saw Marner return to the ice after the game to give a stick to a kid. Class act.
My stance is fuck the kid and his old man too. I don’t even like the idea of a tribute, but ok he was here 9 years so I guess we have to blow him for time served. Kid should be booed for the rest of his life at our barn and every barn that is majority leafs fans.
I was at the game. They booed him loudly for the first half of the tribute when they showed the on-ice stuff. But once they showed him at sick kids hospital talking to the kids and the charity stuff, that’s when the crowd cheered. They still hated him as a player, but you can’t boo videos of him with sick children.
