It would be ideal for the Canes system to have all 3 teams in the same state
Pilige
I don’t see this happening with both team’s current ownership.
UpperDefinition4960
I would love to see it happen. I’d definitely enjoy going to more Checkers games if it was to see up and coming Canes talent developing.
Logistically, if this were to happen, would all the players essentially get moved over from team to team?
JoeMorgue
Yes. One because all three teams being in the same state makes sense and because Chicago is just weird and always seems to act like it thinks it’s too good to be anyone’s AHL affiliate, much less the Canes.
You COULD argue that having the AHL or ECHL team in South Carolina (like back we had the affiliation with the Swamp Rabbits) makes the Canes more of the « Carolina » team than just the « North Carolina » team but truth be told I don’t know how much of a difference that would really make or if anyone really cares.
(Also an AHL team in a city that already has an NHL team is just weird, personal opinion.)

I mean the last time we tried it broke down because Kahn wanted the Canes to pay all his expenses while he pocketed all the profits and didn’t want us to call up players so often because it impacted how well they played.
So as long as that is the mindset coming from Charlotte, fuck em, I’ll stick with our puppet regime in Chicago.
JustShutUpDave
Yes, but I’m not holding my breath. It was a good way to make the « Carolina » more meaningful in the name Carolina Hurricanes. I know several people in Charlotte who became Canes fans because of the Checkers and were really bummed about the switch.
JoeMorgue
Also an updated version of that Jersey with the double warning flag in its mouth would be fucking sweet.
(Like I conceptually liked the recent ECHL Jersey with the Gargoyle holding the double warning flag. Execution was… questionable but I’d buy a good version of that jersey in a second.)

Won’t happen. It’s my understanding that Dundon and Michael Kahn (who is still a minority owner of the Checkers) despise each other. Dundon would pretty much have to buy the Checkers to make it happen, and it seems like he’s a little busier with the Trailblazers, baseball teams, and construction projects in Raleigh right now.
JoeMorgue
Probably outside the scope of the question but also… the NHL team should just own the AHL and ECHL teams and every team should have one AHL and one ECHL team.
maxman1313
Yes, next question.
HockeyGuy601
Ignoring the current 3 year deal with the Wolves, I would say no. Unless, Dundon buys the team. I get keeping the development close but it also really isn’t that hard to get on a plane to Chicago. And moving affiliates yet again is asking for the same issues to come back where the affiliate is unhappy with the usage of prospects. Theres a reason most NHL teams own their affiliate and the Canes learned that the hard way when they had to spread guys around Europe, AHL and ECHL.

I think we would all like that but, sadly, I don’t see it happening.

This is not going to happen, that bridge has been burned. Unless the Checkers get sold to a new owner, this isn’t even a discussion. It would be great for marketing and logistics, but just too much of a mismatch on philosophies.

Or at least have the Checkers no longer associated with the Florida Panthers. Sorry but I can’t pull for them knowing that
Cool_9280
It seems the management and the fans of the wolves all get pissed off when the canes have injuries and call up OUR players. That is so irritating to me. Their first duty is to play for the NHL team whenever we need them, regardless of whether or not the wolves have a chance to win the next game they play. Would love to see them back in NC

1000%. As a Charlottean, I’d just settle for the Checkers being affiliated with literally anyone else besides Florida, but of course the Canes would be ideal. I live just a couple of minutes from Bojagles Coliseum and yet never go to Checkers games because I won’t support the Florida organization.
ThorsMeasuringTape
I think that once Charlotte’s current deal with the Panthers is up that they’ll partner up again. They’re already collaborating with the new ownership group in Greensboro and it really just makes too much sense to not happen.
CasTimber
Yes because I live in Charlotte and would love to be able to see our prospects play. Also I can’t keep growing a fondness for Checkers players only to see them become Panthers.
