Sam is a pretty meh prospect. He gives off Morton or Schwidnt vibes. I’d probably skip him unless there’s something else significant on the deal.
Wasn’t SOR well thought of?
Sooooo they want our Shorty man and arguably best forward for a prospect?
Would prefer to pry Conor Geekie away from them if we could
Since Coleman has a few years left and wouldn’t be a rental, I’d say we need more than SOR, maybe a first, or conditional 2nd that turns to a 1st if they cup? Not sure on their pick status, but I’d think it wouldn’t be a 1 for 1
While he doesn’t stand out to me, Sam O’Reilly is probably close to the best prospect you would get for trading Blake Coleman. He is about as good of a player as you should expect from a late first round pick, and is the kind of player scouts tend to say has translatable skills more than high end upside. The player who is commonly used as a comparable is Anthony Cirelli, but that could almost be seen as a near best case scenario.
He wouldn’t be a disappointing return if the Flames decided to trade Coleman. If the Flames retained salary I would hope for more than just him, but if he is the best piece coming back that is likely a good return for the Flames.
Love seeing these rumours. I would have no issues with the Flames wishing bon voyage to Kadri, Coleman and Weegar. I appreciate their service to the Flaming C but best they go chase cups and Calgary get the picks/prospects
I like Sam O’Reilly a lot, but if there isnt a 1st attached then id rather keep coleman. Tampa doesnt have their 1sts for the next 2 drafts, so there needs to be more imo.
A, yes.
B, Tampa should add, I’d imagine a 2nd and maybe a 3rd or 4th.
He is a r-shot center which we have been striving for and was picked in the first round, albeit late in the round. I would find that acceptable for Coleman. Maybe if they threw in a 2nd round pick to sweeten the deal.
I would be hesitant to trade, just because of the mentorship Coleman has been doing with a lot of the younger kids. We still need some veterans for that role.
I think this was reported few weeks ago that TBL was trying to reunite that line Coleman was on
One thing we must keep in mind is that the Flames can not retain on more than one salary until July first, as they are carrying Anderson and Markstrom until then. With the potential on Kadri and Coleman being traded, this could create a bit of a log jam.
So, this would present a few scenarios.
The least beneficial for Calgary would be to retain on Kadri. It’s a larger $ amount for a longer period of time, but it would be the best way to get a large return for our best trade chip.
Retaining on Coleman is less money and only lasts a year past this season, and would maximize on the return for Coleman, and allowing for maybe a prospect and a late first or 2nd round pick. Plus, it’s a deal more teams can afford.
The third option is finding a 3rd team to retain one or both of the contracts, which would cost us some sort of draft capital as payment. Not a bad option, we’ve got draft picks.
Finally, one of the players is an off-season deal. Once Anderson and Marky are off the books, this would allow us to take on more retention. I could see this being Kadri most likely. Allows for other teams to plan out their cap situation, plus the cap ceiling will increase at that time as well.
So, in reference to this trade rumor, our return would likely hinge on whether or not the Flames are willing to retain or not. I like Sam and a pick for Coleman, but if Tampa is taking on the full salary, I think we’re looking at a second and a bad contract from Tampa unless a third team gets in on the deal.
