From the article:
The Washington Capitals have been brought up in rumors surrounding New York Rangers star Artemi Panarin for the past few weeks.
The Rangers recently made headlines when they announced that Panarin would be sitting out of their final games before the Olympic break for “roster management reasons.” With Panarin likely playing his final game for the club, his departure seems planned for sooner rather than later. According to hockey insider Elliotte Friedman, the Capitals are reportedly not likely to be his eventual landing spot.
“Washington, I think, is willing to do this with an extension, but I haven’t heard about them in a little bit,” Friedman said on Sportsnet’s The Fan Hockey Show. “Someone had said to me that it just didn’t seem likely.”
Previously, the Washington Capitals were listed as one of the two front-runners to land Panarin. The Rangers winger, who has a full no-trade clause, is said to be looking to sign an extension with any new team he lands with, potentially taking him to the age of 40.
Hell of a talent, but it makes sense – need to get younger. Ovechkin window is all but closed and I’m sure the team doesn’t want to mortgage the future for a rental that they have zero intention of extending.
He doesn’t fit our scheme and what the Caps are trying to do long term…..sustainable success post Ovi
Thank fuck. Aside from my general distaste for the guy we don’t need someone who is already aging and wants a ten year very expensive contract who we’d likely have to sacrifice a big prospect and some draft picks to get. Plus I still think what we need is a solid center and another more defensive minded D man, we’ve already got some young guys who can put up speed on the wings if we had better strength in the center to play make and pick up rebounds and loose pucks in the slot.
We’ve got a bright future with our prospects and some of our young guys shaking out well (Sourdif!), I’ll be pressed if we sacrifice that to try to push for the cup especially with the Avs looking damn near unbeatable for it this year.
Yay!
I know our fanbase is kind of divided on this, but I hope we sell. We’re 8th from the bottom of the league in points% and the East is really competitive. MoneyPuck gives us a 25% chance of making the playoffs. So I wanna sell a bit and grab an excellent prospect in the draft. This draft doesn’t have a clear 1OA, but from what I’ve read, the consensus is that it’s deep and its top 10 is above average. Remember how great it was when we drafted Leonard 8th overall? We are currently in a good position to repeat that, even without winning the draft lottery.
good
Since the Caps would want to extend him, sounds like he just doesn’t want to waive for DC. It’s fine, he’s just scared of Tommy still. Also, f that guy, the Caps shouldn’t be open to sex pests on the team.
Why what happened are we bad?
This is good. He’s the wrong age and too much money for someone who may or may not have his production drop towards the end of an extension.
I like him as a rental for a reasonable price but if the rumours are true and he’s looking for a $50m extension then I think we’re better off staying put. He’d be an excellent addition to our PP and could give us a lot this season but he’d be an absolute anchor in about 2-3 years.
If we had won a few more games and were a borderline playoff team I could see it, but we suck and should sell.
Good
Fuck RMNB
I’ll say this, I trust the front office right now. I know they need to make a deal, but if there aren’t any good ones out there, I appreciate them not leveraging large parts of the future of the team to try to force something. It sucks now, but we’ll appreciate it down the line when we still have our key young guys making up the new core and we dont have another aging vet on a bad contract.
Where else are we going to get an elite point producer like Panarin? Who is going to produce points when Ovi retires? We need a guy who is great on entries and can help the PP. 3 years at 12 AAV is worth it for a top playmaker who just turned 34 and will age well because he does not rely primarily on speed. I suspect either Panarin wants a longer extension or the Rangers don’t want to trade within the division. I would trade Cristall plus a top 10 protected first for Panarin.plus the Canes’ second rounder.
I think we have a window opening up now. Protas, McMichael, Dubois (if he heals), Strome and Chychrun are entering or in their primes, and Wilson at 31 is having a career year. Sourdif and Leonard are having very god rookie years, and there is a chance Hutson could be special. But we need an elite scorer.
No shit Sherlock. Even without our losing streak it was a bad fit and he’s looking for a long term home with a contender, which we absolutely aren’t.
Caps really don’t need an Artemi Panarin. I’d like to see him go to the Sharks and upset the Oilers in the first round.
He’d immediately be the best/second best forward on the team. Apparently we’ve offered a 3 year extension. That’s reasonable to me, but I’m sure someone else will offer more.

No fucking doy
Last year distracted us from Caps real future. Great run, but to be realistic, don’t trade picks and young players for Ovi to score 1 goal in Playoffs and get eliminated.
As bad as we have been it honestly might be time to just accept that we are better off as sellers than buyers at the trade deadline…. I know its not what we want but… looking at the standings it does seem to be the reality.
Doesn’t make sense to pay 10 million per for 5 years with a guy who will be 40 at the end of the contract
F the Caps, loser franchise
