Panarin is great. He’s also 35 in October and since we’re not making the playoffs, next season should be the focus. Trading young assets/future picks to get yet another old guy is a step backwards.
I’m all for a big trade that moves young prospects and picks but we need a 1C more than a 1LW. I would also much rather trade for someone under 29 than someone about to be 35.
I don’t care about paying a talented player $12m but it should be someone with some prime years left.

The one thing Washington lacks is star talent. Panarin fits that role.
I’m okay with giving him $50M over 4-5 years as we move on from the Ovi era. We clear about $18-19M this offseason with Ovechkin and Carlson off the books.

Genuinely confused at all this Panarin noise. First, he is deciding where he goes, does he, the big market lover, really want to come here? I doubt it. We’re really not on the verge of a cup run either. Second, he is too old for our situation. We are just not buyers poised for a deep playoff right now and he is not a long term Ovi replacement. He’s absolutely elite and a great player but I don’t think this is a good fit for us. And I mean what the hell would the Rags be asking for? This would be expensive as hell. I’d much rather do a change of scenery with Lafreniere.

I have been a Panarin booster. We have good top 6 talent but no elite creators and point producers. None of our prospects has the potential to fill that void. If we continue on this path we will be a frequent playoff team but not a bona fide contender. So long as we hold onto Leonard, Sourdif, Hutson and I. Protas and get some top 10 protection for our first round pick, I am ok with it (although I would hate to lose Lakovic). We have a surfeit of young forwards that we can deal because they can’t all play for us.
