While I don’t like seeing the slip over these last few games, I’m still so impressed this team has been top ten in power rankings across so many analysts for so much of this season. It has been SO LONG since we’ve seen this!

It’s so weird how the various power rankings don’t seem to emphasize how the games play out / the GD and how the winning (and eventual) losing is done; nor SoS. I agree that it’s hockey, 7-5 W vs 2-1 W is no different in the standings, and the quality and type of team (structure, tactics, individual type of top quality) matters.
There should however be a difference in between a teams top form and not relative to their own play. E.g TB winning coming back from 5-1, was more Boston collapsing and giving up too many PPs (plus Tampa being at home in an outdoor game) and subsequent goals than TB dominating.
While the Avs beat us dominantly. I would not put Tampa first, as I would not have had us top 3 last couple of weeks (e.g The Hockey Guy) even if our points record indicated it at the time.
I do think, when firing, this team can be top 7, but it is so razor’s edge between looking like 2023-24 and December of 2025, but with less scoring overall. I think the chatter about Kadri and other top 6 centers is real, it also looks like it in the team The current slump is not a blip, it is a fatigue factor, teams being more intense and Wings players not having figured out how to be intense without external motivation from the scoreline and the game itself.
Hence, slow starts and great 2nd periods throughout the season, that is the true power, and I think Sabres finally unlocked it, they already had the individual quality, but not team quality and motivation. Wings need to be ready to play, be fired up from puck drop and at the same time improve their quality of play to sustain their position in the standings.
We are not a division winning team, but I think we can be a top 3 in the div team, the problems are mostly mental, and we are seeing a bit of it creep in again, along with injuries and 56 games played; harder to outplay desperate teams too.
I think they need to win against the Avs to do what the 1996-97 team did and expel their imposter syndrome and believe in themselves more.

We all know the weaknesses, top 4 RH defenseman and elite scoring wing. Do both contribute to lack of 5×5 scoring? Yes. Add a gritty hitting forward that can chip in 15 goals to the list because we are not hard to play against physically (see Kings game).
