These headlines like « Facing 20 years in prison! » are just click bait. He’ll not be sentenced to jail time. He was provoked, is a first time offender with zero criminal history, he tried to deescalate… nothing is going to come of this. No prosecutor is going to pursue these kinds of charges and prison sentences.
He’ll get some sort of misdemeanor, serve community service, some probation, will pay some fines, and he’s looking at a hefty civil settlement, but that is it. This is a run of the mill bar fight and the only reason it is noteworthy at all is because he’s well… good at hockey. These fights happen all the time and no one goes to jail.
This kid is not going to jail, no way, no how.

I understand being furious at an antagonist, but he’s going to have to learn to ignore crap like this. Unfortunately for him he’s going to have to deal with more asshole behaviour than most of us ever will. No sense in catching charges and lawsuits over it.
You can’t assault and seriously injure someone who calls your mom a name. I am familiar with these incidents legally and I can assure you that an individual that does so, that is not a celebrity of some fashion receiving favoritism , will be doing jail time. In 95% of cases. Significant time with 90-120 days minimum for those with no criminal record. Battery causing significant injury is a felony. Anyone who doesn’t believe it should go injure someone with a punch next time they are out at the bar and see what happens to them. The outcome for you will not be good . Nearly all the individuals I am familiar with in these situations also lost their jobs as their employers used character & behavior clauses and policies to get rid of them after convictions & jail time. McKenna is fortunate, his employment prospects are likely still good.
