I think it’s fine to dislike Hughes and I disagree with the fans who blame him for « quitting », etc. but that’s your right to have your own opinion.
What I don’t get is some of the tone and attitude of fans who expect that if you sign a contract, or if you accept the Captaincy role & responsibility, that you’re supposed to just sacrifice your career and prime years of your life for a specific franchise. Why? For loyalty? Responsibility?
To some extent, I get it. But the guy actually played well for us, gave us a phenomenal effort (even IF it’s true that he held back on some shifts in his final 6 games), represented us to the media and public in a way that brought us respect from the rest of the league, and most importantly, left us in a way that let us cash in on 1.5 years of his contract and changed the direction of this franchise from doomed to actually halfway to a promising future/rebuild (1st round pick and three young former first rounders). Again, all for a 1.5 year rental. That’s crazy.
So again, you don’t have to like the guy, but why all the hate for the guy who wanted to leave but left us in a (beneficial) way that exceeded all expectations for our franchise?
