No player has a contract with unlimited bonuses. What are you talking about?
Next time around, Suzuki is still going first and setting the same cap-friendly tone while still being your best player and leader. I love Kent Hughes.
Thats why the window is now. Everyone locked up for pretty cheap during their prime. Once those contracts start coming up the cap hits are gonna go way up. Your gonna wind up paying a 30+ year old Nick, Cole, Ghule, Slaf 8-15 million each.
There will be enough space between now and 2031 to add some big good pieces to that core to make a real run.
Now the big question for HughGo is: which players do we start thinking about locking in for the expansion draft?
Assuming 7 Forwards, 3 Defensmen, and 1 Goalie.
The core HAS to stay together:
Caufield (F)
Suzuki (F)
Demidov (F)
Slaf (F)
Hutson (D)
Fowler (G)
That’s 4 forwards, 1 D, and I believe they’ll protect Fowler as the goalie.
So who are the remaining 3 forwards and 2 D that get locked in and protected from the draft??
Hopefully by the start of the 2027-28 season HuGo will have assembled a close to « complete » team to make a deep playoff run with a chance of « completing » it with a TDL deal. It will also be crucial to see how much Demidov and Kapanen will make on their new contracts, which would start that season. Assuming they’re both signed max 7 years, that would take them to 2033-34 (ending at the same time as Hutson). Next priorities would be the contracts of Newhook and Dobes, which I expect to be shorter term contracts.
I think HuGo will want to see the team at least make the cup finals within the next two seasons afterwards before Suzuki’s contract ends so that they’ll have an easier time convincing him to sign an extension.
Engstrom could be good enough to have solidified a regular NHL D spot, possibly filling RD by the start of 2027-28.
Pray that Reinbacher at least pans out to be a competent, defensively reliable NHL RD even if he only ends up being a 3rd pairing one. I think the earliest he could become a regular NHL D would be by the 2027-28 season but we need to see it happen before Suzuki’s contract ends at the latest.
Hage might also get a legit chance to play in the NHL in 2027-28 season as well depending on his development. Zharovsky’s Russian contract ends in spring 2027 so he could also make an NHL appearance in 2027-28 season or more likely the season afterwards.
Fowler hopefully also proves himself to be an NHL goalie by making the 2027-28 roster.
« The Habs have a lot of contracts expiring in 2026-27 »
Tell me Im a fool, but Montréal will be One of the few teams by then who will have enough salary cap and talent to bring McDavid and give him a real opportunity to win the cup. Best comparison is when Hossa signed with the hawks.
