Dont get why this is being posted everywhere. Clear penalty, one hand on the stick, lost control. Easy call.

Yes Mack made sure the refs saw it.

  2. Gargalhar

Bad luck for the Finnish guy. He was probably just trying to sweep towards Mackinnon but obviously the stick lift elevated it up a bit. Clearly the right call though, that stick lift doesn’t hit MacK in the face without him sweeping the stick

  3. USMCArmyRanger

Right call. Shame to end on a penalty but it’s a high stick

  4. Jerekott

As a fin clear penalty and nicely sold by Mack. The better team won but still real proud how well we played. Ristolainen was an absolute beast against Mcdavid. Go beat USA for gold (or loose to Slovakia <3)

  5. bliceroquququq

Nate sells it for sure, but does literally get hit in the face with a stick.

  6. Throwing-Gas

How is this at all controversial?

The stick hit him in the face. That is a clear penalty.

  7. Orcasgt22

Gotta control your stick. Doesn’t matter how it flew up. He wasn’t in control of his stick.

  8. Heldpizza

Yes. High sticking. Is this a debate or something?

  9. Shlong0

Sure hes selling. This still hurts like a mother though

  10. SnowyOranges

So many people here who have never been high sticked with just a visor and it shows

  11. bingbong1976

The stick hit his face. It fucking hurts like hell, as well as it being unexpected.
If you think Mack embellished this, you’ve never been wacked in the face with a hockey stick. Go try it and report back. Will wait here

  12. Kyle73001

A high stick is a high stick. May as well make sure it gets called. It’s not like it didn’t actually hit him

  13. tortured_fanclub

Jussi Saros was their real star. Because of him this game wasn’t a blowout. Coulda easily been 6-2 Canada.

  14. Independent_Sir3734

It’s clear that a high stick occurred. It’s also clear that the ref didn’t see the high stick occur, and only made the call in response to McKinnon selling it. I don’t take issue with the call itself, I take issue with the process.

  15. Elvis_livez

My dream scenario was Canada gold Finns silver. Love the Finns game and players. Always a tough out.

  16. Crafty-Hovercraft579

The way the refs have been calling games these olympics, if Mack doesn’t sell it there this isn’t getting called.

Watch the official in the back, he doesn’t raise his arm until a while after Nate reacted and looked directly at him.

  17. AJWilson55

Finns stopped attacking. Two goals isn’t enough against Canada.

  18. arashinoko

Everyone in here claiming this is a sell job has clearly never taken a hockey stick to the mouth

  19. dooeyenoewe

The title is insinuating that this isn’t a penalty? Need to control your stick.

  20. 90daysismytherapy

It’s a high stick, but that pirouette of a reaction was pretty soft

  21. FrostyOtter8

A high stick is a high stick. If somebody gifts you a power play by making an undisciplined play during the last two minutes of a tied game where the winner goes on to fight for a gold medal, are you supposed to just play it off like nothing happened?

If he ignored it, it would’ve been a disservice to the entire team. He definitely sold it, but why wouldn’t you make sure the refs saw it in this situation? Especially with *these* refs LOL

  22. aporter0509

Really careless penalty to take especially at that point in the game.

  23. Affectionate-Win-791

With barkov Finland might have clutched

  24. RaiderMike824

Ahh yes because getting hit in the mouth with a hockey stick should illicit zero reaction! Shane in MacK right!? /s

  25. Smooth-Escape-2307

The “ you just cost us the year play”

  26. Critical_Pain_7229

Apparently that’s not a penalty according to Selanne.

    Stick goes up
    Stick makes contact to face
This is known as a High Stick to the face

    But not a penalty?

  27. cashout1984

Just bc it was sold doesn’t mean it wasn’t a penalty.

  28. Ogelthorpe-Ogie

Gotta keep your stick under control

  29. WastelandOutlaw007

    Definitely a penalty.

And those crying about it being sold, clearly have never taken a stick to the face. It hurts. Even a glancing blow.

  30. meestazak

Taking a stick to the face is not fun.

All those calling embellishment I invite you to take a stick to the face at high speed and not flinch

  31. zainery

Note sold it. Ref only called it when he saw the reaction. Veteran move as they say

  32. Howryanoww

Dramatic for sure but high stakes and for sure a penalty.

  33. pattyG80

Ok OP…you stand still and I’m going to hit you in the mouth with a hockey stick and see how you react.

  34. spekledcow

I guess it’s controversial because they actually called a penalty??

  35. hartmanwhistler

So many people here have never been high sticked and it shows.

  36. bigjam987

I mean yeah, clear high stick but that reaction is absolutely hilarious

  37. One of the first things they teach kids is to control your stick, easy call.

  38. anana0016

Worst timing for such a dumb high stick. Good job, Mikkola.

  39. National-Wonder-5206

I’m so genuinely confused.. Canada dude flipped other dudes stick into his own face and people are upset?
