He’s right, people just need to chill. You will be miserable if you bring politics into everything.

  2. jaxjaxjax95

I was so proud for him, the boys, and my country cuz like… why wouldn’t I be in this situation?

It’s almost as if they decided to actively go out of their way to make me change my mind in every moment since. Like…. It’s crazy.

  3. Go_Devils_666

I wish Jack would have directly addressed he doesn’t agree with the invitation to the women coming off like an obligatory joke. As far as saying he is proud to be an American, feeling patriotic, and accepting a POTUS invite, there is nothing inflammatory there to me. Country > administration.

Still very proud of how he played and won gold for the USA. Just doesn’t change that for me.

It’s sad any of this even needs to be discussed. Jack Hughes is an ally, he’s openly advocated for women’s hockey, he has not done a single thing wrong and is being villainized for something some else said and for accepting an invitation to the White House. Just look at Jack’s youth hockey efforts in NJ alone, he has done more for the underprivileged youth of our community than arguably any devil ever in his short time here and yet some want to call him a monster. Jack Hughes is a good guy and brought a gold medal to his country. He should be celebrated at a time like this.

I’m not sure there was a win here either way for the Jack and all the US players. Do you not take the call from the President? Do you even think to call him out in the moment after the game hyped up, drunk, whirlwind etc.

I’ll get downvoted but I think too much is being made of it

  6. hypernova13

I’d completely agree with Jack in normal times but this isn’t normal times. I’m going to assume he just has no idea about things going on and give him the benefit of the doubt for now.

  7. grazfest96

Perfect response Jack. Dont apologize to the mob.

  8. DoItForTheTanqueray

You people who care about this stuff really need to get a life.

Your life will be much more fulfilling when you stop making politics the center of your universe.

  9. WholeFlockOneRock

    Been chewing on this one…

-Kash Patel: Shouldn’t have been there. Immediately adds weird cloud to the celebration, and why wouldn’t you want to just celebrate with your team?

-Trump Call + WH visit: Neither are stating “I agree with this man”… it is odd that they’re going for the state of the union though, not a standard team visit.

-Women’s team comment: Saw stories throughout Olympics of both teams supporting each other. Obvious Hughes connection to the team. Guys are coming off of an extended game with a million beers at hand and Trump makes another stupid comment. It was a low moment that they shouldn’t all be painted with a brush for.

TLDR… lotta weird dynamics at play. Head of FBI is holding the phone with President on the other end and you’re on cloud nine after accomplishing childhood dream.

So he’s going to the SOTU and to the White House to celebrate with Trump?

    Fuck him.

I don’t care what he says. Fuck him.

  11. Resident-Talk-5446

Just IMAGINE being one of Epstein’s victims right now.

IDK if Jack was drunk or whatever this fucking sucks

  12. Zestyclose_Estate248

Im very proud of both the women and men’s teams and am very happy for Jack.  The women truly dominated so this whole thing is pretty lame.

    The optics really suck.

They are really gonna let them use them even more than they already have by sitting through the state of the union?  It will be filled with false claims and made up data in the biggest political circus of the year.  Epstein survivors on the other side.  They already stepped in shit with these people, why double down?

I can’t imagine how out of touch you’d have to be to think “no matter what it’s an honor”.  Just optics-wise, what an unpopular president in this country and around the world.  Even then, if you go to the white house visit and skip the SOTU, even thats far less bad.  Like, even with Josh Harris being named in the Epstein files.  You’d imagine distance is probably better.

For christ’s sake, Quinn plays in the state this admin is actively using as an example to stir political violence.    Illegal acts against us citizens is very well documented if you wanna argue with me.  It’s just not right whatever you say.  People are dead that should not be.

I went into the olympics being a little tired of the Hughes’ and the discussion around them.
Theyre young and obviously very excited but this all comes across as arrogant and pigheaded.  If they support the women’s team, maybe understand them declining is probably at least cause for a discussion or a second thought.

  13. LaHondaSkyline

    Whew. Nice goal, kid.

But off the ice you are doing own-goal after own-goal.

In over his head on how the Trump Administration will be viewed by the detached and rational judgment of history (on par with Taney, Southern segregationists, worse than Nixon, and worse than Andrew Johnson).

I get it. He is a pro athlete, so of course he does not fully grasp how Trump and those who facilitated him will be viewed by the detached and rational judgment of history. Asking him and the other players to fully understand that this is not just any random president is like asking me to score that game-winning goal. In both situations, it is not going to end well.

Nonetheless, fair or not, you don’t get to claim ignorance. You make your choices. And you live with the consequences.

  14. nostradamefrus

I really am disappointed in him. He was given plenty of opportunities to clarify his stance. It was the heat of the moment, they were high on emotion, post-game celebratory drinks were flowing, he didn’t hear the joke properly and just laughed along with his teammates…there’s kind of no shortage of cop-out answers to at least try to make it seem like he wasn’t being a complete dickhead

Talking about his admiration for Megan smacks of « I can’t be racist because I have black friends ». It really wouldn’t have been difficult to say « I didn’t agree with what the president said ». There would still be more discussion around whether or not he’d go to the SOTU, but the bare minimum attempt to distance himself from this issue would’ve been made

Maybe we caught him being himself. Maybe he’s found himself backed into a corner and doesn’t know how to respond. Maybe he’s being told not to say too much at the risk of his safety if he pisses off the wrong right-wing nutjob who are definitely more prone to acting on their feelings in these cases. It’s still incredibly disappointing no matter how you slice it

And to everyone saying this is making something out of nothing or it was « just a joke », sure. It was an offhanded, stupid comment. My friends and I say offhanded fucked up stuff all the time. But the person who says these offhanded, stupid comments has shown himself to be incredibly heartless and cruel just for cruelty’s sake. What’s the point of that comment other than punching down? Punching down on people who just won a gold medal after being heavily favored to win? It doesn’t make sense to even say in the first place without there being intended malice

I was happy that Jack scored the GWG but I really wish he hadn’t now. I hate that one of our players is at the center of all this bullshit

  15. jerseyloveee

What’s the point of them attending the SOTU which is far more divisive than a WH visit. Do they realize they’re being used as a political tool? Embarrassing.

For all the good Jack has done in supporting the women’s team, promoting Pride, the reading initiative, Devils Youth program, etc, this is incredibly disheartening.

5 players from Team USA have opted not to attend. Jack made a deliberate choice.

  16. TediousSpark

I miss the good old days when we were tearing each other apart over whether Jack’s injury history warranted a trade

  17. thederseyjevil

A lot of people are suddenly finding out that most professional hockey players came from wealthy families (hockey is an impossibly cost-prohibitive sport at certain levels) that heavily skew conservative because they don’t want to pay taxes.

  18. matty-ice27

I am very aware of how this sounds but we’re watching the Saudi Arabian political playbook play out in front of our eyes.

Take sports heros and prop them as political tools to make everyone forget about the human rights violations and political corruptness going unchecked.

American citizens are being murdered in the streets, kidnapped in broad daylight and being deported to countries they’ve never even been to.

Child predators and sex traffickers are being protected by the most powerful people in our government and not a thing is going to happen to them.

All the while our president is focused on enriching himself, his family and his billionaire friends when you and me are paying more for goods and services than ever before. And nothing is going to change and it’s probably going to get worse.

Sports washing is very real and this is a prime example of it. I said it in another thread, it’s one thing to be proud to represent your country and another to allow yourself to be part of the propaganda machine.

I’m rooting for Jack because he’s our present and future and I want us to succeed with him. But I can’t sit here and I say I’m proud of how he’s handled things over the past 72 hours.

  19. Slight-Philosophy470

Probably forgive the phone call because they can’t control what Trump says. Past presidents have called team before. Trump just sucks. But they also needed to make a strong statement afterwards supporting the women’s team.
They should have let Patel drink in a corner alone. The team did not have to interact with him
Should have told the White House they needed to get back to their nhl teams and will visit the White House when all other Olympian’s go in the summer like they usually do.
Going to the state of the union is really the biggest line for me. They should not be there and are being used for propaganda and ultimately proves the point of hockey not being welcoming.

  20. JoshvsFood

As someone with a bad memory, has a story or incident happen to where the fan base was at each other’s throats like this. Been here since 2013 or so and don’t remember it ever getting this bad

  21. Specific_Kangaroo683

Guys, he had lunch with the women’s team!

    Its alright! 🙂

  22. jdemerol

It’s easy to say « everything is so political » when politics aren’t directly affecting your life. Fans are unhappy about this team embracing this administration because they’ve done some truly horrible shit that is directly impacting their lives.

I guess we shouldn’t be surprised that a rich athlete in his 20’s isn’t thinking too hard about why people « are so negative » about this when he’s just thinking about it being the biggest moment of his life.

If he pulls his head out of his ass, I’m sure his NJD teammates from other countries can explain how you can like the US but not the people currently in charge.

  23. Live-Within-My-Means

    Good for the Hughes brothers.

Fuck the toxic Reddit lynch mob.

  24. taakoblaa

Jack Hughes: prolific reader of books, completely unable to read a room

  25. inspiredpotatoe

For fucks sake… biggest goal of our stars life and one of the biggest in USA Hockey and people want to project all of this nonsense on Hughes and the team. Be happy. Stop being so abysmal.

  26. JonnoKabonno

Headline should be “Jack Hughes can’t handle backlash – doubles down on creating backlash”

  27. pinkrosies

Sometimes I wish we just had players play and not speak. Get rid of interviews whatever.

  28. merpmerp

They could have apologized and said we got caught up in the emotions of the moment, but nope, they doubled down. People are saying don’t bring politics into it, but the team made it political! Why the fuck does the head of the FBI need to even be in the room? Why do they need to be at the state of the union address?? But everyone who’s upset are somehow « making it political »?? It’s crazy

  29. FriedCammalleri23

This discourse is absolutely exhausting and has sucked all of the joy out of this Gold Medal win.

We should be celebrating this win and how much it means to USA Hockey, to the Gaudreau’s, to Jack’s career, etc.

But instead we have to deal with this radioactive administration ruining everything it touches. I’m just so sick of it all. And while i’m not shocked by the players behavior, it is still disappointing nonetheless.
