This is one reason why it was so important for our guys to win – to stop this very thing from happening. Unfortunately, they weren’t able to do it.
Conn Smythe served in WW1. He was awarded for his bravery. He was also shot down, wounded and was a POW. Comes back, takes over the team and then after all of that, he served again in WW2 on the Frontline. He was undoubtedly a Canadian war hero.
Hell, even the team is named after the Maple Leaf Regiment. Multiple other leafs served in WW2.
Meeting with someone who has openly threatened Canada’s existence is a spit in the face to the legacy of this team.
This isn’t just because the US beat Canada. It’s because of what Trump has said, done and represents.
Americans are extremely patriotic. I’m not defending the decision to go (infact I think he shouldn’t have) but I can see him saying he’s always dreamed of going to the WH and this may be the only time in his life he gets to attend. It’s unfortunate Trump is the president, but it is what it is. He’s in an extremely tough spot as the captain of this team too.
If the rumours of him denying the state of the union invite are true, then I can see him saying in his future media engagements that he couldn’t deny the opportunity to see the WH, however he disagrees with the politics of the current administration and who’s in power.
