What fucking hockey player would need to stay for the State of the Union address ?

  2. Adolfcheadle

If this is true, it is honestly fair. Not sure what people expected.

  3. thenickster15

Yeah I think this is kinda the best of the situation. I’m okay with this

  4. MollyGibson84

I feel like this is the best way it could have been handled. He was the captain of the team, I’m sure he felt some obligation to go to the White House. The fact he is doing the bare minimum and then dipping is pretty cool. 🤷🏼‍♀️

  5. DriveSlowHomie

Lol he is definitely copping out now because his PR team caught a sniff of the shit storm coming if he went to the SOTU

  6. Clugaman

If he’s not attending the State of the Union then good. That was the worst part about it.

Matthews captaining a Canadian team and being paraded up on stage with a smile to disparage Canada while his team needs him doesn’t and shouldn’t sit right with any Canadian. I’m glad that may not be happening.

Still not happy he didn’t return to the team today like he should have, but at least it’s something.

  7. My bet: Either his agent, someone in the Leafs front office, or both got smart and advised him to split the difference. He likely feels some obligation to be there as Team USA captain, but the last thing this man needs is to be on video sitting in the House gallery tonight while Trump rants to the nation about how if Canada had accepted his invite to become the 51st state, all their great players could be sitting there with gold medals too.

(Brady Tkachuk’s 1.5 brain cells unlikely to comprehend this so he should have a fun time heading back to Ottawa …)

  8. dwsnmadeit

guess he doesn’t want to be standing beside the epstein victims during the speech.

  9. imagoodsamaritan

The bare minimum is what people needed to move the goal posts, that was quick

  10. Imagine being filmed or photographed with Hitler, basically what the future and your legacy will reflect

  11. Civil War Veteran Brock Nelson is back in Denver and not going to the white house.

  12. bigflexsmallflex

Lol at the people who somehow think this makes it okay.

If he had morals he just wouldn’t go

  13. JackDeckerCIA

Let’s be real here, if Matthews was Russian and was heading to the Kremlin no one here would be saying fair enough at least he’s not going to the Address to the Federal Assembly.

  14. Going to the White House, especially as captain, is at least understandable (though much respect to the women’s team for declining).

SOTU is 10x worse as it is just absolutely pure political puppetry. Going to the White House is being willfully blind but at least is a “post-championship soaking it in” thing (albeit ruined by the context of the current occupant). The SOTU is literally nothing but “I’m a tool” when you agree to attend.

  15. WheatKing91

I don’t understand how anyone could be outraged by him attending SOTU and is completely appeased by just a simple White House visit.

  16. booooogart

I don’t know if it’s enough for me to respect Austin and his decision and if I will continue to support him and the Leafs. I will need to take time and reflect on this.

  17. sleepytigre

Wait so he’s leaving Florida to go to Washington then back to Florida tmw? After winning a gold medal in Italy on Sunday. Sorry just thinking about the logistics makes me tired 🥱🥱

  18. Mysterious-Bad-2756

Considering he’s half Mexican (his mother was born and raised in Mexico) I’m surprised he’d attend anything having to do with this racist administration.

  19. CMDRShepardN7

What the hell are players doing at the state of the union/emperor speech?

Why are people with brains actively choosing to sit and listen to that orange blob talk about himself?

  20. undoneone27

I definitely less respect for Matthews today than I did 24 hours ago

  21. bobcatgoldthwaite

Wow congrats bud. How about you just say you’re focused on team and can’t make the trip like a number of other guys on the team and all the women? Enjoy your photo op w the pedo

  22. DiggWuzBetter

People trying to console themselves with “at least he’s skipping the SOTU” are in denial IMO. You don’t take up Trump’s personal invite to visit the White House unless you’re MAGA. Trump absolutely IS that polarizing – people who are against what he’s doing wouldn’t go. Guentzel, Brock Nelson, Kyle Connor, Jake Oettinger and Jackson LaCombe all skipped going entirely, Matthews could have but didn’t. Let’s be real, he’s MAGA. Here he is shaking hands and being all smiles with Trump: https://www.reddit.com/r/leafs/s/utytVBMVnW

Personally I’d love to see him shipped out. Don’t want the captain of the Leafs to be a supporter of Jeffrey Epstein’s close friend, a pedophile who’s actively threatening Canadian sovereignty. Obviously he’d have to waive his NMC, but if fans boo him enough, hopefully he would. Get this dude off the team.

  23. Atomic_Tom

American Canucks fan, I come in peace. SOTU is straight up propaganda. There’s been this weird correlation of championship winners visiting the White House for I don’t know how long. I guess if the mind set is that they earned the trip to the White House, I can kind of understand that. I’m a Matthews fan. I loved his game in the tournament, dude played great D. I have a glimmer of respect for the decision to not go to the propaganda event.

Edit: also Trump is a pedo and fuck him.

  24. Different-Travel-451

leafs fans should boo him every time he steps on the ice

  25. _BELEAF_

Yeah. I want a ‘no thanks’ from my captain. Fuck that shit.

  26. Forsaken-Swim-3055

I can’t wait to see how fans reconcile loving their country while cheering for a captain who’s getting friendly with a homophobic, transphobic, racist President, who just over a week ago he shared a video depicting Barack and Michelle Obama as apes.

As a Torontonian myself and the son of immigrants from the Carribean, there’s just no way that I can spin this in a way that actually makes me want to follow this team as long as he still wears that sweater. Being one of the most diverse cities in the world is a point of pride for a lot of people here, and this is such a slap in the face by someone who’s literally half-mexican himself.

I’ve tried really hard to get past how toxic hockey culture is when it comes to rejecting inclusivity, but I just can’t do it anymore. I can’t love a sport that doesn’t love me back.

  27. BackTo1975

So what? Bad enough that he went into the oval to shake the hand of a child rapist and racist.
