Leaf management has invested too long in players for what ever reason based on regular season performances.
Leaf management has hung onto one player far to long who they let decide his own career for the next 3 or 4 years remaining on his contract.
Leaf Management has to seriously invest in their minor league teams their farm teams to develop talent that they can play with the big team given a proper opportunity.
Instead watching leave or traded away for rentals that can't resign because of salary restraints or expecting home town discounts.
Maybe the real issue isn't just with the team that the GM put together it is with MLSE ownership board of directors and those who they had hired and believe that they know better than an organization who has been in the NHL for 24 years or another organization who has been in the NHL for less time and have won back to back Stanley Cups !!!!
Over the last 5 years the teams that the leafs did not have to be concerned worry about challenging the leafs for a playoff spot certainly have improved where they are no in a solid playoff position and the leafs are struggling for a wild card spot.
It took some time but look at Ottawa Detroit Montreal where they are now what they did to make the jump .

They waste a year of Easton Cowan playing for the leafs when playing for the Marlies would had been better learning to play in the minors where making mistakes there doesn't hurt as much with the big team.
Cowan wasn't even in the lineup for opening game Quilian was so who over ruled who ?

The Panthers have had success. Sammy is right. They can build on anything when you win the cup twice. The Leafs have nothing to build on. The fall unfortunately is still happening. No defenseman for years and Marner hid a lot of mistakes. Time to look to the future.
Some came to the defense of am34, Sundin got the leafs into the playoffs with hoglund n renberg , renberg benefited playing with the legion of doom line – Lindros, LeClair, he wasn't that good , yet Sundin almost always got the leafs into the playoffs , point – Matthews can't lead a team/not a leader of men, anyone defending him must be a new fan to hockey (young) , and chances are believes in analytics as their bible of faith.

Leafs were building a great team they have not been patience enough it goes back all the way to last Stanly Cup 1967 Harold Ballard destroyed the team after wining the cup and all manegement after that has been doing the same, Leafs were very close with Mats Sundin, and Doug Guilmor, and the last core were youthfull with good talent the trade of Kadri to Avalanche was another downfall of the leafs and the lastest was Mitch Marner he was the engine of the Maple Leafs.
There was no way Toronto with this existing squad was going into Florida to beat a surging Bolts team and a desperate Cats team. That tells you all you need to know. For the Leafs the window is closed, the cupboards are bare and management in retrospect is equally responsible for the product on the ice. I do love the entertainment value of leafs talk though.
I want them to win but i want them to sell. If they sell and lose, i hope they get a lot. If they sell and win, the same but yay they win.
