I've said for a looong time now, I'd love to see the return the leafs could get for Austin Mathews… As a long time "Avalanche as my second team" fan, I had Quebec nordiques/Eric Lindros thoughts swirling in my head. Well, now I fear… it isn't much.
To take the fantasy one step further…. Just imagine for 1 second, the returns we could have got if we traded Marner, Mathews, and Nylander In their prime, instead of sitting on, or signing all of them. You could say to me "that's crazy" but, we all knew how soft each of them actually are. Funny part is, out of all of them, I would have kept Mitch…. oh, and Hunter as GM as well.

Personally I think if it was shanny who was fired and the entire reigns was given to Dubas, the leafs would be a much better team atm. look what he has done to the pens. First year he signed some horrible contacts, yes… but that’s expected with a GM. Trying to show that he doesn’t need help/ a president. Once he wrangled that in. He has been able to get potbelly the best draft capital in the NHL, a team making the playoffs and remade a window, a tiny one, but ones there and made a cap strapped team a buyer, seller and a take of bad contracts to yield both current and future assets. Essentially even his bad moves have helped and good moves have accelerated this teams future and current success. Someone the leafs need desperately. This is a failure of the organization.

Not gonna lie, my favorite part of this game (which was blacked out in my area), was that Florida welcomed and recognized Matthew Tkachuck for the Olympic gold medal….. in front of the (Canadian) Toronto Maple Leafs. Sure, Auston Matthews is American, and yeah, Marchy is Canadian, and got to get back on the ice WITH Matthew Tkachuk, but yeah….. "Way to bring home the AMERICAN gold, boys."
