Bs call
Kicking motion into the net.
Yeah right….
Wasn’t kicked by Cole
I’m fine with the call
Someone explain to me how you can kick a puck into the net from behind the net.
Idk what you guys don’t understand or can’t see. He quite literally kicked it, whether intentional or not is not a question they care.
Although the argument whether the goalie/opposing player kicking it back to negate it is another story.

I understand that it doesn’t count.
It should. Kicking the puck to an area, where it’s then directed into the goal by a defender/goalie imo would be an acceptable exception to the rule.
In football (soccer) there’s a rule that you can’t score from a sideline/touch pass (at least at my level). But if the ball touches the goalie before going in, it’s a good goal.
c n’importe quoi cette décision là.
He meant to get his foot on it but he wasn’t trying to kick it into the net.. he was behind the damn net. BS call
The rule isn’t always perfect but without it, kicking would become a viable option to score
The rule exists because they don’t want players kicking at loose pucks in the crease and possibly injuring or cutting a goalie.
But, while this case is clearly a no goal, nobody is in any danger whatsoever.
Classic word of the law vs. Spirit of the law.

Me
Well, he did quite clearly move his skate so much that the ref could not NOT see it, and counted that as a kick on the puck
Also, shots from below the goal-line are still « shots on goal » if they go in, and many, many players constantly try to score by shooting it off the goalie
So the ref most likely just thought Cole deliberately kicked in off the goalie
37.4 Distinct Kicking Motion – Plays that involve a puck entering the net as a direct result of a “distinct kicking motion” shall be ruled NO GOAL.
A “distinct kicking motion,” for purposes of Video Review, is one where the video makes clear that **an attacking Player has deliberately propelled the puck with a kick of his foot or skate and the puck subsequently enters the net.**
A goal cannot be scored on a play where an attacking Player propels the puck with his skate into the net ( **even by means of a subsequent deflection off of another Player** ) using a “distinct kicking motion.”
A goal also cannot be scored on a play where an attacking Player kicks any equipment (stick, glove, helmet, etc.) at the puck, **including kicking the blade of his own stick, causing the puck to cross the goal line. A puck that deflects into the net off an attacking Player’s skate who does not use a “distinct kicking motion” shall be ruled a GOAL. A puck that is directed into the net by an attacking Players’ skate shall also be ruled a GOAL, as long as no “distinct kicking motion” is evident.

**They really, really don’t want to encourage players to kick with their skates in ANY situation**
Which is of course understandable: if kicking with the skates would be beneficial in ANY situation, players would do it a lot more, causing injuries
You guys get upset about goalie interference because it’s not clear. But this is like, very fucking clear. It’s black and white in the rule book. lol
It looked more like an own goal than anything but according to the rule that someone cited, *it ain’t no good*.
Caufield didn’t kick it, he turned his skate to redirect it. That was a goal.
That’s so smooth! I don’t care if it’s illegal, it should count haha!
The word in question is ‘deflection’. This word is used to denote causing a change in the direction or the elevation of the puck without causing an increase in speed. If there is an increase in speed it becomes a new shot or a new kick. So did the Islander add to the puck’s speed?
I… can’t say I agree with this.
I see the rest of the thread people are being downvoted for disagreeing with the call, so ill get out my umbrella now.
I don’t particularly overly care that it wasn’t allowed, that’s not why they lost the game or anything. But, “distinct kicking motion”? I dunno, Ive read the rule and watched the video a bunch of times, you can argue if it was a kick, some angles it seems to counteract the other ones. My issue is ultimately in the rules it mentions the word “deliberate”. If that was deliberate, we should be comparing Messi to Caufield, not the other way around lmao. It looked more to me like he was spinning around to get into a position to play the puck suddenly and it happened to hit his skate.
In the end, it really doesn’t matter, my opinion ain’t worth the bits of storage space this comment will take up on Reddit’s servers. I’m just surprised the opinion the majority took in here.
I thought it deflected off the back of his skate, the issue is he dragged his foot backwards making it look like a kick. The puck seemed to get momentum off ricocheting off his foot vs the kicking motion he does after it hit his foot. He didn’t have to move his foot at all for the puck to head in that direction. Look at the pic, his foot hasn’t even started that backwards motion yet, but see where the puck is. He doesn’t touch the puck again when he drags his foot back.
I’d love to see a 3rd angle of it.

Never knew there was a rule about a goal being too cool to count
Even if I can understand why it was not a good goal . Last year, the stars did the same thing, and the goal was allowed. I just want consistency. If you allow a goal like that, it should always be good
I’m legit ok with it either way. He definitely scored but the rule is that it has to be a distinct kicking motion towards the goal, no? The RDS announcer said the same thing. But honestly I’m ok with it being disallowed. If we had won, no one would have thought about this at all.
Ya but he didn’t kick it into the net? It went off the goalie and in. I’ve never seen a goal called off for that
