I think the entire team just forgot how to play and needs this season to be over, so they can reload.

I don’t think your premise is accurate. « Used to be great for years, terrible this year. » You think the Leafs got him for very little with cap retention because he was always very good?
As for this year, he was actually great for the first part of the season. Probably the best he’s ever played for us. Arguably our best defenseman. Somewhere along the lines, around the last 20 games, he’s been atrocious. I’d have said maybe exhaustion, but after this long break he hasn’t looked any better in the first couple games back, so I think it’s a mystery.
He was a part of the best defensive tandem in NHL then lost 50% of his tandem. That’s the answer. Still has best +- on the roster.

Just severely overworked for a 32 year old because he’s the only good defensive defenseman on the team. He should ideally be a 3-4 defenseman not a number 1
He’s overworked. The guy is having to play harder matchups and more minutes than he should because this team is constructed terribly.
On a really good team, he would ideally be your third or fourth best defender, but he’s tasked with being basically the number 1 guy on a team that isn’t playing hard, can’t move the puck, and is coached questionably.
There’s only so much he can do, and frankly, with the way this season has gone, and where it’s going from here, I wouldn’t exactly blame him if we don’t see his absolute best down the stretch. Tough to be the type of player he is when the rest of the team is puppy shit soft and only wants to play for 10 minutes a night.

Every player has been actively worse under Berube. Like literally name one player who has been miles better under Berube.
His system sucks. It consists of turning the puck over intentionally (dump-in) and trying to get it back (chase), which is successful like 10% of the time. Then they eat shit in their own end for 1-2 min to try to get it back… only to go dump & chase again.
It turns out that skating backwards to be a meat shield and prioritizing blocked shots while opposing teams set up a shooting drill for extended durations with no attempt to break out or control the puck long enough to leave the zone, is bad hockey
Cale Makar would look like a pylon playing Berube hockey, literally we have to reserve judgement on every single one of our players until we see how they play when not being actively sabotaged

How about instead of asking « what happened to ___________? » on the roster, we can ask « why has everybody on the team seemingly gone backwards in the last two seasons under Treliving and Berube? » and address the first problem that we seem to have.
McCabe has been awful but he’s also missing his partner from last year with season ending injury.
Hate to say it cause I love Berube but this team is not coached well. They are absolutely awful in their own end. Coverages are terrible. It’s like they are just winging it all the time.
OEL and him are the only two that play the game proper.
He was never that good and is now being asked to play a bigger role, but is not capable.
He’s doing his best. Gives it his all every night and plays with angry face. Love Jake McCabe. He is not the problem.
Probably Marner. This team has not been the same since losing him. Doesn’t matter if he doesn’t produce in game 5,6,7 of the playoffs when you don’t make the playoffs. The depth pieces we added have not helped. Matthews is also not the same player without him.
