Depuis son arrivée à Toronto, Bérubé a formé une équipe avec de solides chiffres sous-jacents et les a immédiatement rendus comparables aux années Randy Carlyle. Les deux entraîneurs avaient déjà remporté la Coupe Stanley et étaient censés adopter un style intransigeant et transformer un alignement nonchalant en une unité défensive physique, en échec avant. Ils ont tous deux prêché la défense de la fente, l’effondrement et la minimisation des risques de danger élevés. Ils avaient tous deux des équipes qui n’avaient jamais eu la rondelle dans la zone offensive et qui ont marqué plus du tiers de leurs buts dès la course.
Carlyle et Berube ont même tous deux participé aux séries éliminatoires une fois avec Toronto, crachant la communauté des statistiques avancées grâce à un gardien de but surperformant (record en carrière de Reimer 0,924 sv%, Stolarz 0,926 sv). Les deux équipes ont énormément échoué l’année suivante lorsque les gardiens de but ont cessé de porter, et la direction a été prise au dépourvu parce qu’elle est moins bien informée que votre fan occasionnel moyen.
En disant tout cela, et avec les chiffres à l’appui (regardez les baisses lorsque Berube a succédé à Keefe et sa comparaison avec les statistiques de possession de Carlyle), il n’y a aucune raison défendable pour qu’il continue d’entraîner.
Même pour les fans qui pensent qu’il est un commandant de char et qu’il pourrait conserver le top 5 des choix protégés, pensez à l’effet qu’il a sur nos prospects. Cowan n’a pas joué depuis un mois et est sur la ligne 4 avec Lorentz et Rilton ce soir. Knies a subi d’importantes blessures au genou et ne joue pas selon son niveau. Si on convoque des joueurs comme Quillan, Haymes, Chadwick, Villeneuve après la date limite, on ne verra pas de quoi ils sont capables de faire s’il est toujours entraîneur.
De plus, pour garantir un choix parmi les 5 premiers, Toronto devrait terminer 3e dernier. Même si personne n’a sauté à la loterie, une fiche de 6-20-1 pour le reste du match devrait permettre à Toronto de terminer à la 6e place. Le choix est aussi bon que celui de Boston, alors ne vous embêtez même pas. Tirez Bérube aujourd’hui, promouvez un intérimaire et priez pour convaincre David Carle de quitter l’Université de Denver et amener Sunny Mehta à quitter la Floride après la saison régulière pour devenir notre nouveau directeur général.

Do you guys remember who was on the 14-15 team that was BETTER than this one by possession? Kessel, Bozak, and JVR were the first line, one of the worst defensive lines ever really, they had 61, 49, and 56 points respectively. The 4th leading scorer up front was Nazem Kadri with 39 points, 5th was Mike Santorelli!!!! He had 29 points in 57 games and was traded at the deadline!
That team had 5 players with 30+ points, the 4 I mentioned above and Cody Franson, who was also traded at the deadline, and had 32 points in 55 games. THIS team already has 8 including Morgan Rielly who had 29 points as a 20 year old that season.
The 14-15 Leafs team was ATROCIOUS by design and they had better possession numbers than this team. That’s not a players thing, and if it is, it’s uninterested players who hate their coach and/or teammates.
It really just blows my mind and I can’t believe we’re back here again while we still have some of the stars. It’s inconceivable really.
So if I’m reading the stats right, the only real reason we made the playoffs last year compared to this year was goaltending. This means that opposing teams are also getting higher quality chances.
If it wasn’t for goaltending (or better defense), the coaching impacts would have been felt even more last year already. But, the point is clear, the current coaching has completely collapsed our offense and puck possession stats. Shooting percentage is still good but it should be as we are shooting less.

The big take away from this is how important Marner was to this team. Goal share drops off a cliff without him. Our record this season looks a lot like our record when Marner was injured.
I think it’s absolutely wild that the Leafs in all their wisdom fired Paul Maurice in favour of Ron Wilson.

Ownership sabotages the team by forcing them to be corporate, salesmen, PR reps, and pundits. Media sabotages the team by inciting the fan base with brain dead reactionary takes. The fan base sabotages the team by expecting its players to not just be advocates, but activists.
None of this has anything to do with the product on the ice, but here we are. The players just seem to be over everything but the game itself. It’s the most understandable thing we’re seeing in the group.
As for not having to personnel to compete without mortgaging the future year after year: with all the supposed wealth of ownership, how the organization doesn’t have the best scouting dept in the entire league is awe inspiring.
