Robert Thomas wouldn’t be a rental tho. He’s under contract for the next 5 years and is 26. It’d fit with the plan, just like Dobson did.
It might not happen but Hughes wouldn’t be doing his job if he didn’t try.
Basu has credibility, unlike all the bloggers and phony twitter « insiders » with their wild guesses. He is close to the team and has real sources. He isn’t just using his imagination.
I get a top forward is the sexy choice, but we really need some stabilization on the back end. I don’t know who is available, but we’re soft back there.
This team still has too many holes to make rental trades or feel the need to go for it this year imo.
We still need a top line winger, a 2C, top 4 RHD, and a starting goalie. And that’s without thinking about tinkering with the depth players.
Hopefully, some of these holes get filled with our promising prospects on the way, but until then, they still remain needs.
If there are players on the market that fill those needs and have some future here past this year, then great! But if not, you just remain patient and let the season play out.
> I like Robert Thomas but **we’re not winning the Cup this year with or without him.**
I hate this kind of mentality so much.
Tooooooo many pieces still missing. They are in a playoff spot (but maybe not for long if you ask me) because of their offense. But man, they are meek on the back end, they are weak in goal, and they need better PKers. Danault ain’t it.
So yeah, Robert Thomas won’t solve a thing. Buffalo has a more complete team and they are prime after 20 years of stupidity. Let them have him. We don’t need another forward; we need help in the back.
I don’t think they need to be desperate to make a move, but the opportunity to obtain a player of Thomas’ caliber is rare to come by.
I think it’s a huge mistake if we don’t make a significant offer for Thomas. The odds of Hage becoming close to as good as Suzuki/Thomas aren’t that great, and even if he does get to 80% of their level then that’s probably going to take at least 3 seasons, at that point Suzuki will be 30. Having Thomas backing up Suzuki through his entire prime would be massive, we’d arguably have the best 1-2 punch at center in the entire division for the next half decade.
Everyone here pretending Robert Thomas is the second coming of Mario Lemieux…… the guy has 12 goals….
And you would have to be pretty ignorant about the sport if you think what this team needs is a forward
I’m just thankful the team doesn’t react like the people in this sub 😂
The big question is whether vision is:
– Get good now, deal with the future after some success
– Setup the team for a dynasty with the current core, and then the next wave of Hage, Zharovsky, Pickford etc
Im a fan of the dynasty approach but who knows.
