Apparently the story (at least according to SDPN’s sources, not confirmed) is that the Carlo trade was very last-minute. Brad was trying to get another RHD, but because he was hesitating too much to commit, lost out. But he knew the Leafs needed a RHD badly, and Carlo was still available, so he went to Boston.
But because he had so little time to get this done, this gave Boston all the power in the negotiation. Hence why they went « We’ll go ahead and get this done, but since you’re rushing us, you’ll only get a Top 5 protection, not a Top 10. »
And supposedly, Boston was open to Marchand being a part of the deal for another prospect or more picks, but Brad chose not to pursue that.
