Peut-être le fait qu’on a une excellente offensive est aussi parce qu’on sacrifie un peu la défensive?

  3. Used-Asparagus-Toy

What is the win record before/since the return?

  4. sbianchii

I get what you’re implying, but Dobes doesn’t let in backbreaking goals the same way Monty does almost every game this year.

  5. Zeratqc

The difference is Monty let in way more very low chance of scoring goal in. Letting in a goal that you should save 99% of the time easily, vs letting in a goal that you should save 75% of the time, have a very different impact on how teammate will vs in front of you.

  6. poptubas

The fact that both goalies have a positive GSAx is a joke. It also doesn’t even really fail the eye test, the number of turnovers and poorly defended rushes is ridiculous.

  7. MooshSkadoosh

Having bad save percentages but okay-good goals saved above expected (relative to other goalies) really drives home that the defense is not good and is allowing a lot of dangerous looks

  8. seabee2113

Lol. Just look at games stolen, vs games lost by goalies. Doves wins games and gets shellacked every now and then that destroys his averages. But he steals more games and has fewer games where he is the reason for the loss. Monty had stolen very few games all year and is the reason for many losses. It’s not always about averages, but about how you play in important games. Monty plays best when we have a 3+ goal, Dobes plays best when the game are within 2 goals.

  9. Classic_Doughnut2770

Does dobes let in the first shot on net 20% of the time? Monty does.

  10. SaltyATC69

Dobes doesn’t let it in the first shot on 25% of his starts. That shit is a morale buster

  11. alldasmoke__

Y’all are so annoying. They’re both ass, ok? Let’s just play the one who’s winning and right now it’s Dobes. If/once he starts losing, move back to Montembeault. If he doesn’t win, go back to Dobes. I’m tired of that nonsense. Y’all are debating between 2 bad options.

  12. The main issue with Monty is shots from far away.

Marc Denis this morning said that of 73 goalies used in the NHL this season, Montembeault ranks 73rd in save percentage for shots beyond the slot.

    That’s horrible.

Pretty sure he needs to go see an optometrist

  13. HighWolverine

But, but, r/habs told me that Dobes is the second coming of Hasek because he keeps winning games??

  14. thebrah329

Embarrassing stats for sure, our goalies are a joke

  15. IndependentNo7

Should we try again to recall Fowler?

Or it’s just gonna burn the kid ?

  16. ronniebuttcheeks

Dobes has a higher ceiling imo and Fowler needs someone in front of him before he comes in and assumes Patrick Roy/Ken Dryden/Carey Price’s collective magic.

  17. scrubadam

Looking at his starts since Dec 27th

    7-5 W .800

    6-3 W .870

    4-3 W .850

    3-2 W .941

    7-3 W .897

    4-2 W .947

    3-4 OTL .833

    6-2 W .931

    5-7 L .778

    4- 3 W .923

    10 games

    8-1-1 record

only let in above 3 goals 3 tims, once was in OT. So in regulation he only let in 3 goals only 2 times.

SV% isn’t high because even in games where he allows 3 goals he doesn’t face a ton of shots so his % is low. Its the opposite of a guy with a high shooting % because he only takes 2 shots a game.

As long as Dobes can allow 3 goals or less the team will win.

In the grand scheme of things does it matter when winning 4-3 or 6-3 that he had a .850 and .870 SV% to drag his numbers down?

Now to be fair Monty has not been as bad as people make him out to be.

Since the 27 he let in more than 3 goals 5 times out of 10 games. of those 5 2 of them were 4 goals. Monty’s record is 5-2-3 during that stretch.

Monty has been fine as a backup. There were some games where you can feel he gave away a few points. But really 13 points out of 20 as a back up is not a bad job. 7 of his 10 starts he allowed 4 goals or less with the teams offense that should be enough to get a loser point.

He is not a starter in this leauge and at nearly 30 he isn’t developing anymore.

  18. sid_el_squid

I feel like it’s a mentality thing for the entire team, right? I remember players talking about playing in front of Carey and feeling invincible because of Carey’s confidence/demeanor/aura.

I think Dobes has a certain confidence and cockiness to him that the team thrives on, but that shouldn’t discredit some MASSIVE saves that Monty makes.

Either way, we let up *way* too many high danger chances, and our D never properly clears the front of the net. We still have a host of issues to shore up over the next few years

  19. Gusty331

If only we could add 1 shot to the other team shot counter at the beginning of every game, Monty would be top 15 goalie in the league!

  20. They both are below average goaltenders by NHL standards.

Can we finally just agree on that and stop torturing ourselves here?

I do think the team is better with Dobes in net, but that’s just like, my opinion, man.

  21. -eternal-suspension-

Honestly I think the team loves Monty and they know he’s struggling so they try to over compensate defensively which is to their detriment. I think when our guys focus on defense so much and not making mistakes, we get scrambly and it hinders our possession. Which is why I think Dobes wins more when the stats say they should basically win just as often.

  22. Frisbeejussi

I think both are still good goalies.

Both have been shaky and Fowler is not ready yet.

Monty has better stats but feels like Dobes makes more saves at crucial times.

Defence isn’t doing them too many favors and should be better given how good the guys are.

Depending on the market come off-season I wouldn’t be against trading for a goalie that does better in pur current system but a lot of teams are looking at getting new guys.

  23. AmsroII

    Dobes – 20 wins in 30 games

    Monty – 10 wins in 25 games

Lets not forget Monty has let in a goal on the first shot 8 times this season, roughly 30% of his games, that puts Montreal on the back foot right away, not ideal.

  24. This debate is the same as the Matheson debates or Xhekaj debates or Laine debates. Blinded lovers/haters are so simplistic, flippant and extreme; any real assessment is impossible because arguing against stupid turns one stupid too.

Using stats won’t work, because lovers/haters will just sidestep with their confirmation bias anecdotes, or move the goal post with a different stat & a reason why it’s really the ultimate stat.

  25. Piccione_Sol

In the end it comes to this.

Losing 5-3 in the third. You claw back to 5-5 with 3 minutes to go.

Dobes – gets it to overtime.

Monty – lets in a floater from the point with a minute and a half left.

Monty keeps breaking the flow of the game by letting whole ass christmas trees go in randomly. Dobes doesnt

  26. lucaskywalker

Last game, Monty let in a goal in the first shot. Then it was luckily called back. Monty was like « hold my beer », and proceeds to let in the second first shot! This can be covered by regular stats. It is one step forwards two steps back with him every game!

  27. Dobes battles and gives us a chance to win, Monty lets in floaters from the point and deflates the team

  28. commodore_stab1789

Dobes wins more though. At the end of the day, that’s what this is all about isn’t it?
