Yeeeeah. I’m on the fence on this one. Would love to hear the refs take.
Edit: you forgot to mention he got a game misconduct.
TiredReader87
I hope Ingram is ok. He’s been through a lot. OCD is hell.
Lazy-Background-7598
I don’t think it was actually a five minute major, but because he was injured, I feel like they had to do something, and that was the only reason
gigantes22
Nurse clearly altered his trajectory.

Fuck these refs, I hope Ingram is ok
Thegnife
Mackinnon thought he was playing panthers rules for a second
rustydusty1717
Doesn’t look intentional (McKinnon isn’t the type to me) but considering how hard he was hit I don’t see how you don’t call that a 5. Reverse the situation and there would be uproar if another teams best goalie got their head taken off, again whether it was intention or not.

Nurse literally smashes him into Ingram
Doc_Chim_Richolds
View this play AFTER watching the holding the stick penalty they called on Brock Nelson a few minutes before and it becomes that much more questionable.

Nurse caused this.
bluesocks12
Oof I hope Ingram is okay.
Unfortunate for Mac, obviously not intentional.
Stock-Creme-6345
I’d give Nurse the penalty just on principle.
rockhammersmash
I think all the people saying that MacK would have hit Ingram even if Nurse hadn’t bumped him are severely underestimating the skating ability of one of the best skaters in the world.
A 2 is fine, but it’s clear that there was no intent and probably no collision if Nurse and MacK don’t make contact beforehand.
cheeky_nonconformist
Steamrolls is a ridiculous description. A major (due to the optics) which should have been a minor, and was amplified by Nurse colliding into Mackinnon

8.5(b) « A Major penalty and Game Misconduct penalty will be assessed to any player who injures an opponent by an Interference with the Goaltender infraction that would otherwise call for a Minor penalty. »
No possibility of a minor penalty called here.
Edit: realized this is the Hockey Canada rule and NHL rule book is probably different.

Gotta sympathize with Oilers fans, sometimes. Leading against the #1 team in the league only to see Jarry grabbing his gear to go in for the goalie that got you there.

5 years from now, it’s gonna come out that Kelly Sutherland had money on this game.
russkiy1994
Game misconduct is a lil harsh
NewPilot6335
You think the refs were looking at the replay? He needed to check his parley before he could decide
Away-Information9841
bad luck for sure. nurse definitely caused the hit to be worse than it would’ve been and ingram was moving toward mackinnon at the last second kind of a perfect storm of misfortune. hope he’s okay
Oldredeye2
If you play the puck and a second later collide with the goalie, how is it interference?
I could accept two mins. Five? Terrible call. 😡

Avs vs Refs tonight

Mackinnons villain era is something else, started st the Olympics and keeps continuing.

As an oilers fan, thats a minor.
mitigated_audacity
He was going to hit the goalie no matter what. Nurse does not have to give up that ice just because MacKinnon was being reckless. MacKinnon bumps Nurse in an attempt to avoid contact but can’t. This is MacKinnon’s fault for being reckless. If you are being reckless and you injure someone badly it’s a dirt play. All these things are true even if your favourite player is guilty of them.
scubastevie
Wings fan, supposed to hate the avs, that wasn’t a penalty let alone a 5. He was angled away until he got smashed by nurse
Tayls23
Steamrolls? Hit by Nurse, unable to continue his planned cut to miss the goalie. Something he does all the time?

Is the ref American?

A lot of fucking non skaters here picking their butts.
geeginater
ooh that’s a rough one!!
BeneficialPipe1229
oof. gotta say that was pretty dangerous, might be some discipline since he’s not a panther
vbcbandr
As an Avs fan, MacKinnon was angling away from Ingram before Nurse hits him back into the goalie. I’m fine with a 2 minute minor, maybe he would have skated through the blue paint but he definitely wouldn’t have steamrolled Ingram if it weren’t for Nurse. I have no clue how they got this wrong after looking at it for 5 min.
Bro why tf did no Oilers players just go after Mackinnon right after the initial hit? I mean sometimes players barely touch the goalie after a play and their teammates just team on em. And after such a hit you’re doing nothing? Okay… what a great message to send.
Let me preface, I don’t think it was intentional. I’m an avs fan. But I think regardless if you lay hands, or what could be a dirty hit, you fight/defend for your goalie.
Using_Wagon23
Id say he would’ve probably still hit Ingram, but there is no way Nate went out of his way to truck him in the face, as seen by the very obvious slow-mo footage.
Interference yes, but to give him a major and misconduct and toss him was egregious
Side note, another reddit post brought up the Avs being 3-12 when Sutherland is referee, and that is too coincidental for me, especially considering his trip play where he stopped the puck on a fast break(which would’ve easily been an icing) for Toronto to take the lead.
Sutherland is the on-ice version of Angel Hernandez imo
toolmantimsworkshop
So first things first I’m an oilers fan I watched this video a few times an couldn’t see a Colision with Nurse, however for my fellow deniers out there find the other clip on this subreddit and watch it two or three times it’s 100% obvious nurse knocked mack into Ingram

Avs have only 3 wins in their last 12 games reffed by Kelly Sutherland.
A stat that needs to continue to be looked at as time goes on, but it’s becoming more and more significant.
Jeez… that’s scary… thank god there’s a mask
