Players want to play and win, even in a lost season they want to play and win. They don’t want to tank and they don’t want to sit out if they’re healthy (which Matthews could be).
Bad hit and poor response to it by the Leafs. And then again, when has Matthews ever come to a teammates defense ? Like leader, like followers.
The idea that the NHL has players like Gudas in it, allows them to negatively effect the skilled players ability to entertain fans and when something like this happens, typically nothing comes from the player discipline peeps is why it’s just not a serious league.

He should have been shut down for the season a couple of games after he came back from the Olympic break. It was clear the team were going to be sellers and it’s pretty obvious he was dealing with some sort of nagging injury before the hit tonight anyways.
