Good, now rescind the credentials of the ref who called it in the first place.

Big Oilers fan. It’s the right call, Nurse sent him right into the goalie. Surprised out of everyone it wasn’t Nurse who walked away hurt.

Lol at all the people in the original post adamant that it was a penalty. Surprised the league did this cause it makes the refs look so bad even after review, but its right at least.

So we pick the game up where it left off right?

The head of replay and replay assist is Kris King and Sean Ellis. They are the ones who feed the refs the definitions while they look at these calls/goal challenges. In this instance, the rule clearly states « if a player deliberately skates into the goalie, it can result in a major ». MacKinnon was very clearly bumped by Nurse. Kris/Sean should have flagged to the refs that this did not meet that definition. Yet according to that PR statement, it seems like they misunderstood the definition.
If you include goal replays, Kris and Sean has had a hand in a LOT of wrong calls all year. Reviews with goalie interference have been an absolute mess this year and far from consistent.
If they can’t understand what « deliberately » means, the NHL should move Kris and Sean to another role. I get its a hard job, but this keeps happening.

If Nurse was playing for a check on McKinnon, I don’t think this gets called. If Nurse doesn’t successfully play the puck it probably doesn’t get called.
But, Nurse makes a big play to deflect the puck away from the net, I think that was the reason the refs called it as they did. From that outlook, it changes to McKinnon hitting Nurse and subsequently, then hitting Ingram.
If the Oilers make the playoffs by a point of two and also knock the Avs out, this will definitely be something they could point back to. Otherwise it’s pretty inconsequential in the grand scheme of things.

I still feel it should have been a 2 min penalty
And maybe a 2 min on nurse.
Not a 5 or game misconduct, that was absurd.

That’s a rare admission by the NHL that they bungled a call. Usually, they stand behind their refs no matter what, at least in public. Maybe the combination of a marquee star receiving the penalty, a nationally televised game, and what was very likely a game-deciding consequence actually got Bettman’s attention.

Avs are 3-9 in the last 12 games that Sutherland has reffed. I’m not one to blame outcomes on the refs, but that needs at least looked at. Is there another team/ref combo with a comparable spread in the last 3 years?
AcousticOcean26
You think they’ll do Brett hulls foot in the crease tomorrow?

I’m not being sarcastic at all, but what does this mean? Is there a benefit other than being able to say I told you so?

Nice of them to rescind it after the game two days later.
Wow so helpful, NHL! Thanks!

It wasn’t a game misconduct but it was worthy of a 5. Goalie got destroyed. You can’t ignore that. As a goalie myself, getting run happens all the time and nothing comes of it. Most of the time it’s incidental and not intentional. This is also one of those non intentional but he blew up the goalie. You can’t let that go without a 5. It’s also obvious he was trying to play hockey rather than run the goalie. Non the less you still have to pay the price even if it’s not intentional.

Good, It was never a Major penalty in the first place. Nurse pushed him into the goalie.
