Ice cold take, it’s been their biggest weakness this season.
aspronaut_
Extremely cold take. Robidas and his man-on-man system should’ve been sent packing in November.
24Archduke
We have Matheson, Dobson, Hutson and Guhle all signed until 2031, either they improve, or one of them gets traded.

Shut up Meg!!!

Yes. Stop blaming the goalies. Were the Oilers at this point. Its the defensive play.

Lol i guess you don’t know the definition of a hot take if you think that is one
_makoccino_
Every time I say we need top 4-D before 2-C, someone tells me I’m wrong. Then we lose another game due to bad defense. Then the discussion starts, and we string together a couple of wins, and the consensus shifts to needing a 2-C more.

Monty being bad has masked how bad the Habs Defense is.
Like, is monty bad this year. Ya.
But the reason the Habs are giving up so many goals is not just because monty is bad, it’s because the Habs Defense sucks.
YYCToon
Do you know what a hot take is lol
BlueishPotato
Might be recency bias or something of the sort, but wasn’t pairing Dobson + Hutson a way better look overall for the team.
Such-One-5266
Didn’t Pronger just say Habs style won’t go far in the playoffs 😁 MSL will likely get fired when their window opens next year and the team is still unable to close out games.

Big problem is Guhle. For a defensive defensemen I don’t see it… then the other defenders are more offensive minded.
GuyLivingInCanada
Team defense took a hit for some reason. They were doing so well before the break. It has to be a coaching issue cause if teams can scout and play the soft zones behind the defense, we are missing something. Same thing happened against the Sharks and Sens

More sand paper please. We har a team dat is so soff. Nobody respeck us. In da playhoffs, we are fouré.
Vingt-Quatre
Hutson is focusing so hard on the offense that he’s constantly trying to catch up with the guy he was supposed to cover. When there’s a 2 on 1 or a 3 on 2 happening, you can bet your life that Hutson is behind, trying to fix his own mistake. Then, there was this bonehead play on the GWG where he decided to leave the front of the net wide open to go take a peak at what was going on in the corner.
I mean, he’s great and his +/- is way about 0, but if he’s gonna play like this, he’s gonna need his teammates to keep an eye on him and be willing to cover for him.

Monty could have told you this months ago.

The Ducks having 3 men chasing the puck all the way to the area behind the net, all night, was very problematic.
Lots of pass interception on their part. Someone on their coaching team studied the Habs and did a great job.

I’m confused how is replacing a defenseman supposed to rise above a bad defenseman system exactly?
Safe-Storm6464
So when it’s Fowler or Dobes in net our defence is the problem, yet when it’s Monty in net it’s only his fault eh?

Unless Monty is in the net.
Then, Monty is the only reason we lose.

The defensive system is atrocious. I’ve never seen a penalty kill be so passive and shrink towards the net so much and give the opposing team as much as they want to make plays. Also, just generally speaking 5 on 5, the defencemen can barely get the pocket of the zone, constant turnovers, and that failed clearing attempt where they ring it around the board and it gets kept in. I’ve never seen a team be this bad at clearing the puck in front of their net.
Top_Contract_4910
I know the goal this year or at least the expectation is not to win the Stanley Cup. But the team still needs to be competitive and needs to create a winning culture. That’s why I was confused as to why Kent Hughes didn’t try and pick up a top 4 shut down defenceman. Seems like it was a trade they desperately needed to make to fill some of these gaps.
syn_47
Maximum 1 offensive dman(ideally none and just a two way dman for the PP) and even that one needs to be put on the ice with extreme caution. Matheson needs to be gone for a stay at home skill-less dman with no youtube highlight package you guys would hate. And we need to treat Hutson like his goalies have a restraining order against him, keep him away. But that’s tough because so often he gives up the puck in the O zone because he wants to be featured on sportscentre which leads to the death of our possession and an odd man rush by the other team followed by offensive possession by them with Hutson in our D zone which in itself should always be classified as a scoring chance. A panicking pylon on the first goal and decides in a panic to go as far away as he could from the net and in front of the attacker to attack the puck creating a breakaway that shouldnt have existed on the last goal. Wow! And then we blame the goalies..nothing fowler could do about a 3 on 2 that plays out like a 3 on 1 and a nothing that plays out like a breakaway because of the same player. This is why goaltending sv% is so low now across the league. The undersized forwards(Dionne, MSL, Fleury etc) are playing defense now and every team has one or two. That means 1 or 2 extra goals against every game
ThunderNichirin
Robidas can fuck off for all I care. As much as we have reasons to eb angry with our D-men, we also have to turn the cannons towards the primary defensive coach who allowed so much bullshit to happen and who didn’t address those issues.
Get a veteran coach to teach the Ds here ASAP.

Habs need more defensive forwards too. they don’t have a real shut down line of forwards.

Hot take…. Defensive contributions make goalies

I’ve been saying this so much. I feel like Monty would appear to suck less if the defensive was, well, a defensive.
