On the topic of the NHLPA appealing suspensions and the NHL wanting 5 or less games to avoid that. The repercussion of that is it has actually forced the NHL to make the standard 5 or less games because if they go higher the NHLPA had an easier appeals process by pointing out all these last ones as precedent which a 3rd party arbiter will actually factor in favor of the NHLPA and their appeal. So we are stuck in a place where even if someone else took over and tried suspended higher the appeals process is almost guaranteed to be in favor of the NHLPA. The only fix at this point is honestly a renegotiation between the NHLPA and the NHL on this specific aspect of the CBA.
If you guys are putting value on these final 20 games, assessing players honestly – you are lost at sea my friends. This team is now playing hard, after being shamed, after literally not trying or competing for previous 60 games.
9:37 I'm not saying anyone copied anyone. In fact, I highly doubt it. But Trevor Plouffe on Talkin Baseball suggested the exact same regional tournament but for baseball in yesterday's episode (same day as this SDP episode). Great minds think alike I guess.

7:30 During the 1994 NHL lockout the NHLPA organized a four team tournament (I think it was 4 on 4 play) with teams from Ontario, Quebec, the western provinces and team USA. If I remember correctly, team Ontario won.
Best on best hockey of some kind needs to occur in lieu of an actual all star game. Even though I’d still like to see a better way to accommodate European players, running back 4 nations (even with a team North America and Team Europe) would surpass what the all star game can bring. If you wanna still do some skills competitions in between, that’s fine, but the centerpiece of a mid season event should always be some semblance of best on best hockey

The NHL desperately needs theatre to be introduced to the all Star game. I remember when they did the "draft" in 22/23 and Suzuki was taken by Matthews team. Suzuki should've said "no, I refuse to play for the captain of the leafs." Make it fun
An all-star game idea that could work but would likely not be received very well by the owners would be similar to what the MLB has done in the past where the conference that wins the all-star game gets home ice advantage in the Stanley Cup Final. This may also be beneficial for young stars without playoff experience to compete in a high leverage game.
How about former referees decide suspensions, the guys who know the rules inside and out.
The NHL is basically run like a high school council. You do well based on popularity, and you can still hold power cause you were popular once. You got airheads making decisions based on what they think is cool or based on what a buddy tells them. They don’t stay true to their word. They bite off more than they can chew, cause they’re immature and apparently “don’t know any better” or “ehhh I just got here”

I think you guys think about George Parros and Gary Bettman completely wrong. They are incredible at their job. George Parros' job is to protect the rest of the league and Gary from criticism as much as people and take it all himself. Gary Bettman's job is to do that for the owners. When the NHL or Gary Bettman does or says something you don't like and you attribute that to Gary, it makes Bettman strong. His job is for you not to blame the owners directly. STOP CALLING OUT BETTMAN AND PARROS. Call it like it is. Every owner in the NHL is an absolute piece of garbage and if you want to say somebody with the NHL sucks, just replace it with an owners name. Ed Rogers is scum of the earth who wanted his captain to get kneed. He probably thanked Gudas for it.
Marty Turco in Boston is the one example I can think of where a player signed as a UFA after the trade deadline. He played like half a dozen games for the Bruins down the stretch when Rask got injured.

My dream scenario would be the following:
1 year: Olympics
2 year: North America vs Europe
3 year: World Cup of Hockey
4 year: North America vs Europe
You make the NA vs Europe a 3 game series, it could be some sort of variation of the Ryder cup/Laver cup. One time during the four years is in NA, then in Europe. It would be shorter than the Olympics/WC and you would have all the best players participating.

Steve. Spezza intentionally knee'd a guy in the head. Radko's hit, dirty? Yes. Career-threatening? Yes. Spezza's hit was potentially life-threatening. Different stories, and both hits should have led to more games.
ASG idea: Have the NBA and NHL swap players for each other's all star games. Who doesn't want to see McDavid v MacKinnon in the dunk contest, or SGA vs. James Harden in fastest skater?
Detroit missing the playoffs again cements the failure of this management group. They were healthy all season, while other teams struggled under crippling injury bugs and couldn't lock up a spot. Now, they lost any other franchise's assistant equipment managers to injury and hemorrhaged playoff spots for a week. Their 5v5 scoring has been among the worst all season, just as it has for the previous two seasons. They've dined out on outsized shooting % and a top 10 powerplay. It is not a durable, playoff capable roster.
Seattle, LA, and San Jose are all within striking distance of
the Oilers (and all have games on hand) so don’t know why Adam feels the need to constantly sh*t on the Pacific Division. There are other divisions that are actually worse if you’re going by how many teams have a chance at the playoffs.
All-Star idea: four teams, Old Guys, Young Guys, split the rest by conference, four nations format.

If it’s awkward to include Russia in the World Cup then it should be awkward to include the USA.
Jesse neglected to mention on his “Sharks lost to the Sens when the sens were on a back to back” rant that the Sharks were also on the second half of a back to back. And using a goalie who hadn’t played an NHL game in 2 seasons because Askarov is injured. Whole lot of missing context to allow you to dump on the Sharks more easily.

For the all star game bring back the fan vote for a player in each division and have player captains pick teams again like when the sedans did it and kessel was last. That one and the John Scott one were the last all star games that were any good and it’s because the players gave a crap.

The all star game isn’t that bad, we’re just sick of it because for so long that’s all we had, if we’re going to adhere to the schedule it’s really not that bad and every other year you get something better than an all star game
