BPA is the correct answer. I really like Malhotra and Carels though

Obviously Mckenna and Stenberg are the dream, but outside of those two I’m a big fan of Viggo Bjorck

If say we land in the 5 spot and the top two offensive guys are gone. Getting a LD to play alongside Parekh should be a high priority. Carels is that guy
It couldn’t hurt for the flames to lose a few in regulation to stay in the 3-5 range pre-lottery to increase these odds

I’m intrigued by Alberts Smits. But I think Carels or Reid would be great too. Obviously Bjorck. There are plenty of options.

Best player available. The scouts will have their list. From what I’ve seen and read about the top prospects here’s my two cents: McKenna and Stenberg should go #1 and 2, then there’s a range of 3-7. Reid, Verhoff are both big RHD. Smits and Carels are both Big LHD. And Malhotra has established himself as the top centre. Who the best player is out of those is currently up for debate, but Reid is probably the highest ceiling/most dynamic. Verhoeff has played great at the NCAA level. In a few years that’s Parekh, Reid/Verhoeff and Bru on the right side. But we lack a top LHD prospect so Carels or Smits also would be a fantastic pick. Malhotra I love and top centres are notoriously hard to come by, especially for the flames. He’s 6’2 and has no real weakness in his game. The only question is his ceiling. Is he going to be a top line centre? Most scouts are saying he’s probably not quite at that level. But yeah we still have U18’s, college tournament, CHL playoffs and draft combine ahead of us. The scouts will finalize their list and stick to picking their top available player.
Short answer: Chase Reid

Bjorck for sure,
Mahlotra looks uninspiring, Bjorck looks like he could be a superstar if everything goes well, we saw how good he was in the World Juniors and how he broke scoring records last year,

Obviously evreyone knows 1-2, then from 3-12 I would be excited about evreyone and trust Conny to make the right choice for us, but I like:
1. Caleb Malhotra, from evreything ive heard and seen he is the most guaranteed to reach his potential (like before the season he learned evrey ref and linesman first name to try and sway calls, thats pro level from a 17 yo). Is his potential a 1C tho…not sure.
2. Tynan Lawrence, I know hes dropped a lot in peoples rankings but imo he is the only kid in this draft with elite 1C potential. He was the top prospect for years out of that school Crosby went to, had dominated at evrey level, was made captain of his USHL team as a 17 yo after winning the USHL as the 1C at 16, super young for this draft (August 2008), got a minor injury just as he was stepping up to the NCAA, and then had an underwhelming 18 games with BostonU points wise, but I thought he looked better and better as the season went on and McKenna also struggled a bit in his first 18 games in the NCAA, and that was not coming off an injury…he will probably go like 8-11 but I would absolutely trade up for him if he drops below that and wouldnt be upset if we dropped to 6th and got him.
Lawrence and Malhotra are gonna be playing together at BU next year, so we will see who’s actually better!
3. Carson Carels, literally a perfect long term partner for Parehk and our blue line would be set for a decade or more. Do I pick him over Verhoeff, Reid, and Smith…not sure, but would love to have him.
Special mention to Bjorck, Hemming, and Suvanto. Hoping our Vegas pick drops low enough to snag one of these guys (or we can trade up for one of them). Obviously I also want the Ruck twins, but not over any of these guys.
Never been so invested in a draft!

I hope we take Joe Iginla. His draft stock has fallen like crazy yes but could be a solid pick as a late 3rd rounder as he’s projected to be

Wonder if we have 3 if we can trade the third pick for Tij. We definitely don’t need another elite RHD.

I’d personally go for Carels. He’s a big, mobile LD with high offensive upside. The Flames are one of the few team that lack LD depth (versus RD depth) so it works well.
I’d personally avoid Lawrence. He’s never really shown to have elite offensive upside (he’s only really been above ppg once in his career so far). I don’t really see the point in drafting a third line centre in the top 10.
Bjorck seems like a fine player, but the Flames already have a glut of skilled smaller wingers. I’d also trust the upside of the D-men more.
I’d be fine with Reid, Malhotra, Smits, and Verhoeff.

Ruck Twins. I know the main question is who we take with our top pick, but it would be so sick to snag both the ruck twins (and we totally can with the picks we have)
anthonywmzk
Keaton Verhoeff, Tynan Lawrence, Caleb Malhotra, Viggo Bjorck, in that order.

Interesting spot for the Flames to be in. The current group of guys is responding well to the coaching staff and winning more games than most fans are hoping for. Might need some lottery luck to land McKenna at this point.
If they don’t get 1.01 I would prefer to see them take a chance on Carels, Verhoef or Smits. Carels and Smits being LHD would project well on a PP with Parekh in the future.
Hard to say where there 2nd first round pick will be, but they’re in a strong position to go BPA there, although my preference would be the highest rated Dman.

If you run this over and over the Flames pick Malhotra 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th unless they win the lottery and get Mckenna 1st lol…
