Sharing this as a gift article, so hopefully folks who aren’t subscribed to The Athletic can read it. This isn’t our own beat writer, Max, singing Mo’s praises as he does many times a season – this is Dom Luszczyszyn saying straight up that Mo is the best defensive defenseman in the league:

    >The 2025-26 season should be viewed as Seider’s coronation as one of the game’s great unicorns from the back end. He’s become a one-of-one talent delivering do-it-all two-way ability like few before him in a mean package: a unique franchise defenseman who should be a Norris finalist this season.

    >But we all know how these votes sometimes go and Seider finishing the season with roughly 55 points, while others score 80 or more, unfortunately makes him a tougher Norris sell to some. That will be especially true if the Detroit Red Wings miss the playoffs, to no fault of Seider’s.

    >The season Seider is putting up is special and there should be a place in the game to celebrate it; an award for best defensive defenseman would do just that. In some of the league’s most difficult minutes, Seider has become an absolute force, allowing just 2.34 expected goals against per 60 and 1.94 goals against per 60 this season, some of the best marks in the league despite the degree of difficulty.

Just make a Bobby Orr trophy for most impactful offensive defenseman and the Norris the most impactful Defensive

I remember when they used to call that award the Norris Trophy, good times

  4. notgoodatthese

The best award is the Stanley Cup. so make the damn playoffs

We don’t need more trophies, we need fewer. The Selke is just as pointless as this would be. The Norris does a very good job at rewarding the best defensemen in the game and Seider’s excellence this year will get him votes and probably put him top 5 in voting.

I think he actually has to win an award before something can be called after him.

    I’d argue he’s a two way D…but semantics?

  8. Great article by Dom. Refreshing to see such a high opinion outside of the Wings bubble. We all know how good he is. The local media and beat knows how good he is. Time for some league wide recognition.

Replace Mo with some dink like Bouchard on our back end and let me know how that goes lol

Here’s my suggestion, blatantly stolen from baseball:

Golden Skate: Best defensive player at LD, RD, LW, RW, C.

Silver stick: best offensive player at LD, RD, LW, RW, C.

Obviously not the type of award where you give a speech at the NHL awards but it gives you something for the mantle and something for the resume.

You can even give out one to the Western Conference and one to the East.

It allows defensemen like Seider and Slavin to be recognized while admitting Makar and Hughes do more to help their teams win.

It allows guys like Alex Tuch to be recognized for their defense while admitting that faceoffs are incredibly important defensively and a center should usually win over a wing.

And it’ll cut down on the « he’s due » nonsense voting and better reflect the actual season at hand and not reward a guy for the last 5 years of being third best.

I’d actually agree there should be an award for defensive defensemen, just like there is for the Selke with forwards.

Seider is good enough to win a damn Norris anyway, but he won’t because voters can’t get past what Cale Makar does offensively.

    *Best regular season defenseman

I hope Mo stays with this team his entire career. Hes been a bright spot in these dark times

i dont dislike the idea solely on the existence of the Art Ross/Selke comparison.

An Orr Trophy for offensive defenseman and the Norris would be acceptable.
