This was the risk we took for not trading Pickles. Losing is not in his vocabulary.

  2. Players don’t tank, these guys are playing for their next contract and for pride and honestly if Backlund or Coleman or any of the Veterans came out and said the were purposefully playing worse for the tank I would think less of them.

This is exactly what you want to hear from the leaders on the team and the young guys are gonna see Pickles and Backlund putting in 100% effort and learn that you don’t throw in the season at any point

Backs had Iggy Conny and Regehr to show him the way and now it’s his and the rest of the Vets turn to show the young guys how to be a pro!

this is all on management for not trading them all

  4. Interesting_Pea_3206

Upsetting team tank but never being able to make the playoffs 😂😂😂😂 Basically saying have fun watching mucky middle for years

  5. memyselfandiowa

I’m glad they’re playing to their abilities, but they’re going to give us later first round pick if they keep playing well.

Try and go near or above .500, boys.

  6. default_ad_2026

I’d expect pro athletes to play as well as they can. It’s really a management choice to ice the young guns and give all the up and coming talent a shot at the show to see who has it. Now is the time for that.

Love this team. Love Blake Coleman. They haven’t been this exciting since the before times

  8. StrangeADT

I can’t be mad at him, but I can be out of pure selfishness. If I was him I wouldn’t tank either because why screw my own worth? I get it. But damnit man, I just want a team I can cheer for after 20 years of mediocrity preceded by 10-15 years of mediocrity.

  9. RangerGripp

Backlund is really super, super pissed about the results. He hates losing.

This is from a direct source.

He is not happy losing and there is no such thing as tanking among the vets.

  10. Thats hilarious but also mildly upsetting at the same time. Regardless, the underdog mentality can prove to be a strong motivator and hockey is all about that shit. Plus, what’s extremely encouraging about the recent hot streak is it’s been lead by the young guys.

I’m for it, fuck it. High draft picks increase the chances of success but so does a locker room that plays for each other. And Conroy has been so good with drafting that I’m not concerned about him having to pick later.

All about building a winning culture, love to see it. The draft lottery is really unpredictable so love to see that from our vets rather than giving up on the season.

  12. Unfit2play

I fucking love how comments like these, from the ones that matter, personally offend the tank crowd.

I don’t get how some people think “tanking” is something we can turn on/off with a switch.

Like we can tell our young players to play well, but not too well. Develop enough, but not too much to the point that we win a bunch of games.

Tell our veterans to guide our young players, set an example, distill good habits, and show them how to give your 100% no matter what.

But wait, let’s not do it this year so that we have a higher chance at a higher draft pick (and hope it doesn’t have a negative effect on the development of these players).

Pray that we get a high draft pick, pray that it becomes a generational talent that can then carry a team that we’ve been trying to willingly hold back. What could possibly go wrong?

Don’t get me wrong. I want a high draft pick too (I’ve been hoping that we lose some hard fought games) but I don’t want it to come at the expense of the rest of the team.

  14. It’s kinda tough, on one hand I want us to get some top level talent in the draft, that unfortunately means wishing them to be at or near the bottom of the standings which is where we are now roughly, but I’m not against them winning either, finally seeing some of our younger players finally get more time to shine and showing how tmgood they are has me excited, and the trades we made have really elevated us, the question now though is it enough? With what we have cam we play as a more competitive team next year or could we still benefit from getting a top prospect?

  15. Confused_Astronaut

At this point I’ve given up on top 3. Just hoping for top 5 now. But there’s so few points separating us from other teams.

  16. Timely-Guarantee7917

I think people people need to try and start getting excited for other players in the top 10 of the draft. I feel like we are going to finish 4th worst. Ive noticed by CONSTANTLY doing a mock lottery Sim, we often pick 5th or 6th at that position. Players like Malhotra, Carels, Lawrence, Belchetz, Smitz, Bjork (organizational need type players) are all available, and are all still very talented. Add in the fact that I have a gut feeling Conny will go all in on the Ruck twins (I feel like we have the best shot at them). Also the talent we’ve already acquired! We are sitting pretty, and likely have a top 3 prospect pool next year. Be positive people. If you feel like we are going to keep winning, just look at the killers we gotta face on this upcoming roadtrip. (Colorado 3 times haha)

  17. Timely-Guarantee7917

Also our young players are winning us these games!

  19. I’ll just say this.

In the modern era, you don’t win without game changing talent.

Whether that goes 8-9 deep in Flames mgmt’s eyes, is something the fan base is going to trust.

These are proud vets that have been here for a while, they clearly targeted guys that were totally out of favour with their past teams (Maatta, Strome, Olafsson) and they’re showing what they could do with a little faith.

There was no guarantee you were going to win this lottery, and actually I think it’s great the foundational pieces are saying nuts to this.

7pts out, as unrealistic as it is, you tell that group in there anyone they play scares them.

They should have swept that homestand we all know it

    Edit: spelling

  20. Sea-Control-8593

Blake must like being the only guy in there with some rings…

  21. Sea-Control-8593

You guys know any good tattoo artists? Thinking of getting “17th for Life” inked across my throat. Or forehead.

  22. Good, he’s a professional and that’s the exact type of player I want to cheer for.

Who cares if Flames end up picking 5th instead of 2nd? Still need to make the right pick. Anyone can bust, even McKenna. It’s up to Conny to go to work and make the right pick(s).

But you aren’t going to get the players to mail it in and not try. Besides, it’s not like young guys haven’t been given ice time, or guys haven’t made NHL debuts… we have dudes who were healthy scratches elsewhere playing games and doing well, what are you going to say to them, stop trying to prove your worth?

  23. It’s genuinely hilarious seeing how triggered some of the fanbase is by Coleman’s innocuous joke.

  24. such a great winning culture that lead to never seeing a top 3 pick. havent seen this team do any winning since I was 5.

less playoff success since lockout than the sabres who havent went to the playoffs for 14 years.

we can afford to tank one year where we’re pretty much already out of playoffs.

obviously players are gonna play but management really should be doubling down harder.

  25. We have better calibre players than Florida or NY who are playing so shitty that it is clear they are fucking tanks on purpose. at least we hate fucking losing.

  26. sociallyrestarted

People mad about this are crazy. Coleman is a gem and he’s showing the young ones that you work your ass off no matter what. That’s what we want from the veterans on your team, and why im glad we kept pickles and shipped out other guys instead

  27. Invidia-Goat

They can deny the inevitable all they want but players like Coleman are simply not skilled enough to change the fate of this team,

You can’t build a contender around Gridin and Parekh
