  1. I don’t think people understand how hard it is to find elite guys like Matthews and Nylander. If we moved off them we might spend 10 years being terrible again instantly. Retool is obviously the right way to go, unless those guys want out. We had 110 pts last year.

  2. Actual_Cobbler_6334

Yeah, I’d rather he stay. Despite what the boomers and Facebook uncles think.

  3. LegitimateRisk-

This is even more reason to just tear it down. If he is willing to waive the no trade for the a rebuild than do it. Start all over again.

I love Nylander and think he’s built for Toronto. He is also a player/person who probably wants the big city for his off ice lifestyle.

  5. wtfhiolol10000

Nylander should stay. The balance of his salary and talent/points make sense to me.

  6. TheThoroughCrocodile

We’ve « re-tooled » every year for almost like a decade now. Rinse and repeat. It’s going great 👍

  7. Necessary_Purple_428

Nylander rides line 2 so you know he’s a real Toronto manz. Keep him.

  8. Ok_Mulberry4331

Willy will retire a Leaf, he loves the city, the team and is perfect for this market

Nylander is one of my favorite players but unless we rebound under a new coach next year we’ll need to move off him and Matthews. Our goaltending is finally solid but our defense core is already old and will be in in their mid to late 30s soon. With Matthews injury history and are starting forwards all hitting 30+ we probably should be rebuilding after next season

I like his skill. Dont like the optics of him on the back check. But wtf do I know? Nylander is what he is. He’s not going to back check for you. Id say move on from him. I know he’s super cool for riding the subway and for his super cool dont give a darn attitude but for those reasons alone he has to go.

How much of last year’s 108 points (for the Leafs) was the rest of the division sucking ass as opposed to the Leafs being good?

Their record against division rivals was pretty damn good in 2024-2025 and it’s basically gone to shits in 2025-2026 with them losing most of their head-to-heads against Buffalo, Montreal and Boston – all teams that didn’t make the playoffs (or barely with MTL) last year that are being propelled this year by young energetic talent.

Retool sure, but that’s just moving different parts around, it’s not really changing the talent pool or changing the attitude in the dressing room. The draft is a crapshoot at best and the pickings look pretty slim this year.

  12. luckylukiec

I say retool and see how it works under a new GM and coach that has a system better suited for these players. If that doesn’t work then rebuild, especially not having a pick the next two years.

  13. swagginpoon

Fuck keith pelley and fuck mlse. This is why we are in this mess.

  14. reevoknows

    I’m sure he does lol.

I’ve been a Willy defender for most of his tenure here but I honestly just don’t want his attitude being an example for younger players while we try and establish a new culture. I felt the same way about Phil Kessel. Great players but are better suited on a team with an established culture and core so he can just show up and go about his business instead of being expected to be a leader and the veteran in the dressing room.

  15. alphacheese

Love that he wants to stay, but if it was a full rebuild he’d be an example of an outgoing body anyways to be fair lol

  16. Showtime98

Not surprised he genuinely loves it here. Y’all can’t make me hate Willy Styles.

  17. Solid_Internal_9079

You’d be a fool not to attempt a retool. This team has too many things going that could go so right for them to at least not attempt it.

I’m not saying force it and keep going against the grain should it fail but you need to at the LEAST give it a go for a season before blowing it up.

  18. Grand-Amoeba1832

Willy loves Toronto! Happy to hear. I can’t imagine him elsewhere.

  19. Outside of Him, Tavares, and Tanev (don’t get me wrong I like Matthews), they actually want to be here and win. Just trade every guy that doesn’t want to be here and for god sakes fire the President as well.

  20. thismadhatter

Cold streaks or not, he’s still on an adjusted 100pt season pace.

The guy is an asset. Matthews is more of a question mark these days.

  21. Chtholly13

idiots don’t realize how hard it is to get elite talent let alone an elite #1C. There are teams that have attempted to rebuild, and don’t have superstar players because you still need to win a draft lottery (Flyers, Detroit). No, Matthews is not going to easy to replace, anyone thinking should see a doctor.

  22. DarkSideofTheTune

Why does Willy think this is his decision? He’s under contract

  23. Love Willy but wish he would’ve jumped in more on Gudas there and that last Anaheim game when Cowan came rushing into his defense.

  24. BeefJerky03

He’s our best player, of course I want him to stay.

  25. It would be cool if the captain of the fucking team said this.

    Nice leadership Matthews.
