Honestly this part stuck out to me more than anything else: « To lose that guy the very next year … that was probably a fracture of everything. And yet, on some level, **it felt like you could see it coming for years**, I would say. »
Though TBH, the listing of players that have now left the Canucks feels more like a jab at management than anything. He started with Zadorov and Lindholm, weren’t these just guys we the FO didn’t feel were worth the price tag as opposed to there being friction between players?
ETA: OP, is the subtext you’re seeing here that Hughes said JT Miller played the right way, vs someone else not? TBH, I don’t think it’s really that deep, but who knows…🤷🏻♀️
« Could see it coming for years. »
Better trade Horvat and keep Miller!
Why is this subreddit obsessed with every ex Canuck. Who fucking cares
Miller and Petey were fighting for years. This was reported long ago.
The situation didn’t blow up until Canucks Coaches/Management sent Miller after Petey to toughen him up (Friedman) after they misunderstood/misdiagnosed Petey’s Knee injury.
And Btw, Quinn stood up for Petey on National TV when everyone in the media was putting him down:

I swear I saw this exact same thread when this was first dropped.
Legitimately who cares about Hughes’ opinion on this team when he forced himself off the team.
JT Miller got traded from 3 teams. And there’s always been questions surrounding his attitude. So it feels like Quinn was implying that it was a matter of time based on what he saw in the locker room, how he communicated with others and saying “it felt like you could saw it coming for years”.
Ep40 for 68, 102 and 89 points respectively between 2021-2024. So I’d say it be hard for Miller to be so critical of EP40 when he’s one of the top scorers on the team the years when Quinn saw it coming
interesting things to me
1) he couldve spoken up and demanded management not trade either jt or petey, and they wouldve done whatever he asked. as captain he also should’ve prevented the situation from ever even getting to that point
2) he seems very nostalgic for the 2024 team, understandably so. it’s funny how he talks about how his new team will not come close to the 24 team’s number of wins. again he should not have allowed this core to crumble then. good chance that ends up being the biggest season of his career. i feel like he’s regretful but its too late
Does anyone else not find it weird how he said this:
“We had a great team two years ago. I thought Rick (Tocchet) did a great job, Adam Foote did a great job. Thatcher Demko being injured hurt, big time.”
And then not mention EP40 as part of the success? Like the guy that has holds the highest paid contract in franchise history?
But he mentions Lindholm and Zadorov, etc?
OP is right. It doesn’t look good for EP40.
The team was built on a shaky foundation, and then it blew up when we gave 11.6 million to Petey.
That was a big reason that we couldn’t afford to give Zadorov and Lindholm enough to keep them.
I am so tired of this crap. That core was doomed from the start when Benning screwed up and all but drove all the locker room guys to the airport, leaving timid ass can’t take a single pushback Petey, a dude who crashed out his way off 3 teams Miller, and one of the most ineffective leaders in the history of the Canucks Hughes. Only actually good leader was Horvat and they shipped him off. I can’t wait to leave this era in the past.
Hughes lists a reason of how miller was a top 5 player in his mind with stats, that’s the most indirect way of saying Petey should have been the one to be moved, not miller. He brings it up for a reason, because everyone knew that was the big debate here.
Hughes doesn’t seem to be the type to blast Petey in the media, but I think it’s more of a shot at management – for giving him that contract.
I too also draw a bit from the fact that he said miller played the right way, and wasn’t cheating. Wonder what he’s alluding to there. Maybe it’s Petey, and that his stats were padded in his opinion? Not sure.
I agree with others though, I think if he was so opinionated about this, as a captain he should have done something about it. But Hughes family seems to strike me like the tkachuk family now, just non stop bitching behind the scenes and not being accountable for any of it. Always deflecting, and looking to the door when a Canadian market gets tough to find an American market to play for instead
