Not Roy’s fault. I know you can’t fire the players but almost half of this roster is now going on their 4th head coach with this team. Deboer will have the same issues once the new coach bump, if there is one wears off.
I have to believe the trigger was how awful they have been playing in these meaningful games. Slow starts and too many stretches of mass confusion. I thought it would be Cassidy. Before that, I prayed we would hire Quenneville. Deboer is an improvement. Roy could be a good coach some day, but he needs a few years as an assistant.
They will get an initial bump, but not long term, just another recycled coach,. This is all on the players, it's not like we have a team of rookies, far far from it.
Over the past 2 weeks, other teams have gone into playoff mode, checking has become harder and defenses have tightened up. In the same period, the Isles have become more sloppy and have been left in the dust. Not sure if the move will work out but I think Roy showed that he wasn’t the guy to take this organization to the next level. No excuse for the level of play up and down the roster but they haven’t looked prepared to play for a while now. Without Sarokin record would be much worse.
It's not complicated: The Islanders are a sub-500 team that is not that talented. The team played way, way above their baseline all year due to Sorokin standing on his head this season with a horrendous defense unit in front of him and an 18 year old phenom, that's it. If not for those 2, the Islanders would have lost 10-15 more games this year. What's stunning is Darche instead of seeing what he had this season and open roster slots and cap space for youth, traded for Schen (-30!) and Palat at the trade deadline and is now stuck with these way too old diminished players at $6 million per year for the next 1-2 years and resigned JG Pageau for another 3 years when he should have been trade for value. All 3 slots needed to go to youth to rebuild. Blame Roy all you want, the issue is on the ice not behind the bench. You can bring in Al Arbour and that still wouldn't help.
I’m roy fan but I knew the reality darche didn’t hire Roy and this was inevitable. Might as well do it now before other coaching jobs opened up after the season. Also what’s with the French inflection when you say Roy’s name 😂
Only in the NHL will a team headed for the playoffs, and then fire their coach (without something serious off-field/ice incident happening, like a DWI). Wow.
Everyone saying he was getting fired in the off season. If the isles had gone 2-2, or 3-1 in the last 4, and cruised to a 2nd or 3rd place finish, does he still get fired? Or is it the last 4 games only?
Darche has done everything he can, whether it works or not as a different conversation. It’s now on the players to prove how much they want it. We’ve changed coaches several times with the same core and gotten the same results. Need to start changing some of the players somehow.
100% right move. The lineup needs to be upgraded for sure but the PP & defensive gameplan were clearly poor. Never expected to be sniffing a postseason but the effort from the guys is directly attributable to the HC. And he will be in for the draft, which is a plus.
The islanders improved from where they were last year and in a playoff spot as we write this. A new coach cannot do much after just four games. There was no way I would fire Roy at this point. Let him finish what he started. Clearly the wheels have fallen off the wagon in the last two weeks.. but, you’ve gotta let him finish the season. We weren’t winning the Stanley Cup, regardless of making a playoff or not.. It was the right thing to do. You could hire a new coach a day after the season ends if we don’t make the playoffs. From a human standpoint, it’s an embarrassment for Roy who has given his life in this game. I’m very disappointed in this move on so many levels .
I liked Patrick Roy as a coach, but I just think it was inevitable once the season ended that Roy was gone, unless they would have finished strong and had a decent playoff run. Had they just fired him and replaced him with a temporary assistant coach, I wouldn't have agreed with it, but I do like Deboer as a coach, so we'll see how this all plays out. Thank you to Patrick Roy for being a good coach and a class act during his time on the Island. Let's Go Islanders !!

Now we need a captain.
never seen our fanbase so divided by a move
I think the move came now rather than at the end of the season before another team hired him.
With 4 games left? How desperate of Darsche to try and hide the fact his TDL acquisitions were all mistakes lmao
NHL coaches seem to make the rounds the way the same Hollywood actors are in every other movie.
The players failed Patrick Roy and it is sad to hear him gone from the NY Islanders.
I think this should have happened a couple games ago.

Happy Easter
Maybe this was going to happen regardless. Now MD can bring in people we wants ?🤷🏻♂️. Since the Olympic break this team has been down more than up.
Vegas set the trend, everyone follows
I don't think Roy is a great coach but I don't like how this implies the team is trying to fast forward this re-tool.

Now DeBoer has to write two letters 😉 The old Russian Khrushchev joke.
Not roy fault. The defense with all the old farts are the problem.

Rumor was leafs wanted to hire DEBOER after they fire Berube at end of the season.

He looks like General Zod.

De Boer it’s more of a structure guy in the vein of Barry trotz so maybe that will help
Just stumbled on your channel. How come your French is so good? Are you really from Long Island?
Roy didn’t deserve to be fired

Wish Roy well, he tried but it was time to go.

The last 4 games were terrible. If we can tighten up the defense and reduce the turn over we can do something.

You can't blame this one on Lou.
Probably a mistake. Don't like the way it was done with four games left. Thanks Patrick and good luck Pete.
Sorokin is the main reason the Islanders had a chance at the playoffs. A team cannot lay down like they have and keep the coach.
Soon lifespan of a coach will be less than a season.
