Ther overated there big players choke
Roy was relieved of his duties because his coaching performance, the last month or so, can best be described as doody.
I love the hiring of Peter DeBoer as the Islanders new head coach. Although Roy's firing came too little too late, I guess the Islanders were waiting to see if DeBoer wanted the job? Could this be why the Islanders waited so long to fire Roy? Probably. I guess Jon Cooper put it out there, albeit quietly so as not to get the Islanders in trouble for "tampering," that he wasn't interested in taking the Islanders job. Any how, the guy has a nice pedigree: Lost in the conference finals 6 times. Lost in the Stanley Cup Finals 2 times. Let's see who he brings along for the ride, as his assistant coaches. Could DeBoer finally win a Stanley Cup, with the Islanders? Now i'm excited again, for what the future brings, but Darche has not done a good job in his first year with the Islanders.
Darche needs to move many passengers, from this roster, over the summer. Clearing salary cap should be job one, even though he made the mistake of extending Pageau, will unfortunately and incredulously, resign Lee. This team is done this season, and will not make the playoffs next season, with a majority of the roster over 30 and another year older and slower. My move would be to see if Vancouver or Seattle would trade us their 2026 first round pick for Barzal. Then I would look for another first round pick for Sorokin. It's time.
Why do I get the feeling Darche would have ridden Roy to the end of the season, and this was an ownership decision because not making the playoffs hits them in the revenue/wallet department. One more thing: you can't play an up style system with aging players whose skills are ostensibly deteriorating in real time.
These guys don't show up to play the game there not kids they need a babysitter your getting payed to play a game if you can't play than get rid of them .
My concern is that this is too little too late. After the back-to-back losses to Ottawa and Montreal, I put the balance of my season tickets up for sale on StubHub. In my way of thinking it looked like the players didn't care and if they didn't care, why should I? Maybe Darche saw the same thing and it took him this long to work out the deal.
On a positive note, DeBoer is a respected coach with a proven track record. He didn't have to take this job with the Islanders. He could have waited during the off-season for another deal. I believe he took this job because he saw a good future here based on some of the young players we have now and our prospect pool.
Good afternoon, Gil. How are you? The Islanders fired Patrick Roy this 🌅. When I first heard this, I couldn't believe it. He lost control of the locker room. I have nothing against an uptempo game, but I think it would only work if the Islanders are younger and faster. I like Patrick Roy and I wish him well. I hear that Peter DeBoer, is an old school coach, and how well he gets along with Ilya Sorokin remains to be seen. Hear from you tomorrow, Gil. No comparisons. Now, LGI 🏒 🔵🟠. 🐰
Toronto fired Treliving saying culture was the culpert…🤔 The culture of The Islanders is racketeering; pure and simple as there isn't a fisherman amongst the bunch! Hard to pay attention to the coach with: BOOM TIS… BOOM TIS… BOOM Tisssss…on the mind while on the bench? Roy wasn't the coach to get these mollybabies 'salty' nor was Lane Lambert; who's got a hard working bunch rolling in Seattle… It's a community identity thing as I pointed out with 'The Jaws' segways… perfect for the '22 minutes' skit as a salvage trip…
What a lame move. DeBoer is a bum, a real loser. Roy wasn't to blame for having a weak team.
Darche bigger problem has made 3 awful trades but Roy coaching very suspect. Btw how is a veteran team that they are nervous before game like Roy said, says a lot about there team leaders
Happy Easter! Sharks fan here. It saddens me to see this. I remember being impressed with him when our teams met this season. I hope they can bounce back and make the playoffs.
Shocking they fire him on Easter.. I liked him except the pulling the goalie with 7 minutes lol … but in hockey they will fire any coach at any time … especially if they collapse at end of season durring a playoff chase … Happy Easter all
This move means nothing unless the team changes its direction, philosophy…..must become younger, faster, more athletic…Gil I'm sure you agree
Too late. Should have happened prior to Philly
Don't forget though that in 2000 Lou first fired Robbie Ftorek, late in the season, to hire Larry Robinson. They won It that year.
Hey Gil thanks for taking the time to make a video on the holiday weekend. Happy Easter. I think I would’ve rather have seen Cassidy maybe as the new coach but we’ll see what DeBoer does. Darche should take some responsibility on the trades he made as well. I mean Tsyplakov wasn’t doing anything but I’d rather have seen a draft pick instead of another aging vet and Soucey adds size but that obviously hasn’t done much. The Schenn trade I’m on the fence with because isles lost a first rounder for that. So in the end if next season it’s more of the same Darche needs to look in the mirror as well
To little, to late
Agree with you Gil regarding the trades
I don't see Roy as the main problem here. The Islanders' ceiling has more to do with roster construction and depth than the guy behind the bench. Why now? It seems like another panic move by Darche, a desperate attempt to secure a playoff spot this season. LGI
There was no doubt that Patrick Roy had lost the locker room. But this firing was somewhat expected, but not at all surprising.
Other than that with only 4 games left in the regular season this didn't happen until the season ended whether the Islanders made the playoffs or not.
Hopefully, Peter DeBoer will have a few days to maybe set up a system that can work for the Islanders and get them over the hump to lock up a playoff spot before their next game.
I disagreed with roy's lineup decisions, but hate to see him get fired. Think isles were being opportunistic to get deboer now, otherwise you let roy run the season out.
I think their struggles lately can be attributed to Darche. He brings in Palat, who's 35 and slow, he brings in Soucy who's 31 and slow and then brings in Schenn who's 34 and at the end of his career. Throws off the chemistry of the team and Roy feels like he has to play them. What happened to the youth movement? George is an able d-man, Shabby hasn't been given a fair chance. Why didn't Duke play more? I don't think anyone thought they would be in a playoff spot in the beginning of the season, now that we are Darche is looking like Lou, make the playoffs at all costs.
Gimme a break this team isn't that good you got 3 or 4 good players that's it and Soroken overrated
This is really bad decision regardless. We are over performing, and we gave away a first rounder in hopes to get in the playoffs. This team is not what management thinks
Mathieu Darche made trash trade deals at the trade deadline. As I said, the problems run much deeper than Coach Roy; Good Coach! Take your time picking your next HC job in the NHL or Juniors, and take the Isles' money for 2 more years before making a rash decision. Happy Easter and Happy Passover Gil
Right on Gil 300% and you're right I wouldn't have done it on Easter Sunday they should've done it sooner the islanders very badly need at least one more game to work with four games a possible eight points which they need all of and may not be enough if they lose one game they're done definitely because the other teams have one and two games in hand I think you said that but since he did it probably should've waited until tomorrow the problem is and his reasoning probably was he has four days to get acquainted with the team wanted to use this off time to let the team get integrated with him as much as possible, put this three or four days to good use and have less than that.
The more I think about this, I feel it's a real douche bag move by Darche, 4 games left in the season to me that is kicking Roy right in the nuts, Darche is worse than Lou, all he did was stumble into Schafer, and trade for some semi retired players. Roy has to go for sure… But what would 4 games make any difference, I would have given Roy 4 games and have him fired in the off season. I think this is totally classless by the Islanders. Roy won a couple cups as a player and one as a coach, and showed no respect by Darche, lost my respect for this team,
Losing the team is what happens I think when you implicitly say you don't believe in the team he didn't want to lose the team so he were soft on them as far as being delusional the same we played well when we didn't I just keep playing the way they were playing even though that Islanders show between. Make corrections even coaches that win say that we need to fix things and tighten up on things but when you're detached from reality and he seemed we have little to no standards definitely didn't articulate a goal as far as winning games that we could hear and also when we got a peek in the locker room you're kind of saying that you don't believe in a team although that scenario is rare and usually coaches lose the team in another fashion but because he didn't want to lose the team by being tough and doing what needed to be done as far as a system standard gave them ready to play which they almost never have in this year playing a complete game etc. by trying not to lose them he lost them. Because some of those players maybe a lot of them hopefully all of them think they could do better and they want to do better. constantly said he wants to focus on the positives after a loss the difference between that and ignoring the truth and making fractions of you made. Thankfully it's behind us. Good luck to him.
Really solid playoff success for Deborah I get it there's not as much talent on this team but like you said multiple Western Conference finals and two finals appearances also. He knows how to win and perfect game seven.
i hinted at this last week so this doesn't surprise me after butch was fired last week with 8 games left. roy scapegoated for darche's failed moves is all this firing is about. putting a weak ass roster that only got older not better with no scoring punch was a failed approach. and pouty deboer? the guy that takes teams far but can't win the big one? HAHAHA what a fkn desperation move. darche should have sought scoring punch and better d men, not replacing roy with 4 games left to take heat off of his moves. 44 re-signed as well as 27 not moved for assets. 29, 4-fail. 10, 81-really not needed. one first given up with no second this draft. could have signed 30 g scorer mantha instead of 29.
it doesn't matter who isles coach is-isles only go as far as 30 takes them. and remember pouty was canned by stars for foolishly taking oettinger out playoff game for giving up 2 early g's that weren't all his fault in an elimination game stars lost to oil. not sold on pouty. his record shows he takes loaded teams far yet can't finish the job. vgk, stars are proof of this. and isles aren't a team oozing with all star talent. at least pouty won a mem. cup title-22 years ago. and roy still has his other job as owner of remparts to fall back on.
and flyers with a game in hand w today to push isles into w c spot. and pens w again to move 7 pts. up on isles so kiss 2 in division bye bye.
FKN b s move. i'm sure roy wanted and was promised a younger faster roster to play a more pressure game. instead roy was given nhl's fourth oldest roster and stuck with malcontents he was familar with from q days 11 (thanks louzer), 29 (cost a first to get rid of) that failed.
That pisses me off a little bit about Lou after that first year there was no reason to give Roy a for your extension when he was hired it wasn't just for the rest of the year he had another year or two anyway and then Lou tacked on another two or whatever years make it four
we were close to the playoffs one way and Lambert got fired we made the playoffs and this it's not to diminish that but he only made the playoffs since we had an 8 game winning streak at the end of the year but either way is very similar to Lambert who was fired obviously, and should've been, and then we got our asses kicked in the playoffs in five games in the first round. So that I don't think at all should've necessitated an extension for an overall four years now he has two years left that we're paying him as you said
Have no issue firing Roy, just the timing. Couod have been done at end of year but the owners want the playoffs and Darche made the move now. I dont think debor will make a diff. This is 5 coaches now for alot of these players barzal, lee, pelech pulock cz have been around since capuano and theyvare older now not expecting much. Yeahbhe made the finals with devils and san jose unfortunately joe thorton, pat marleu and joe pavelski arent coming out on the ice. Have to win all 4 games lets see. Dissapointed
My opinion, Roy was the scape goat here, i really blame the "veterans". They rely too heavily on their goalies and an 18 yr old. They failed to get motivated and out of their own way. Im just frustrated. All self inflicted wounds.
The only thing I disagree with Gil is I see your point for this year that it could be a desperation move if you're looking for or at just this season, it's not a desperation move if that's the guy that they wanted they would've faced competition to get him or certainly more of it than right now they eliminated the risk of losing him by doing it now and or driving the price up.
It seems like other teams score a lot of goals on Islanders by shooting from the point. Will be interesting to see them do this
There is enough blame to go around. The aging long contracts that Lou left them with leading to aging and poor personnel (Mayfield 7 years), plus Darche himself brought on aging and poor players (Palat, Soucy) while not doing something to address the defensive depth at the deadline. It was obvious to me that if one more of the Top 4 defenseman went down it was going to stretch things to the breaking point. Losing Deangelo did that. Roy waited way too long to start George
I liked The Pat Lafontaine , Easter Surprise much better about forty years ago.
Also last night no adjustment to break out plan
