First Time First LOL. A couple times this worked so some teams are willing to shoot for the moon.
Growing up in the NYC area, this is not uncommon. Roy was doing a good job, but if you don't own the back pages, you can't expect to keep your job.
I realize that all managers/HCs have a short leash, but hockey seems to have the greatest turnover in HCs. It makes you appreciate Scotty Bowman even more.
The Islanders would not even be in their current position if they had not won the #1 draft pick last year. They basically did nothing to improve their club and deserve to miss the playoffs.
Two of Tortorella's first three wins with Vegas have been against teams that are near the bottom of the league. One only of Vegas' final five games is against a team above them in the standings so Tortorella's true impact on the team won't be revealed until the playoffs or early next season (if they keep him).
It’s not late for this season. It’s early for next season.
nhl is known for this. its a momentum sport. teams copy success. when teams see pens, blows, and nj fire their coaches late in season and go on to win the cup they do the same thing instead of staying stagnant. nhl-its just get in and have a chance league.
-in the case of vgk they are a win now impulsive team so firing butch who led them to a cup this late is no surprise.
-in isles case they are not a good team just held up by 30 in goal so a coaching change wont make a difference with 4 games left. this is about darche scapegoating roy for his failed moves making isles 4th oldest team bringing in old guys who made no difference while glaring needs like scoring, d depth remain. the move to pouty is more a move for next season.
-basically its just passing the same recycled coaches around hoping it sparks success syndrome that afflicts nhl. some coaches that fail one place like sullivan hit gold the second time around. coach q-third stop. butch-third stop. maurice-fourth stop. pouty-now onto sixth stop and still waiting… lavi-5 stops, won one cup. gets immediate results then players tune him out by year three.
Are there only seven guys that coach in this league?
Grabbing Pete now before anyone else gets him is good move by Isles…
Tortorella is "Mike Keenan light". He wears out his welcome quicker with each team he's coached.
Roy’s man to man style in the d zone was getting harder to play. Lots of older guys on the isles especially on defense. The team ran outta gas and they give up the 2nd most high danger chances . Roy never was able to adjust his strategies so he was the one that had to go.
The Golden Knights played with no life and couldn't play a full 60 minutes. This was a smart move for Vegas
I’m a casual hockey fan in Vegas. I’ve never really understood the hiring and firing cycle of the NHL. They seem to always do it mid season and it’s always a retread.
Devils fired thier HC with 3 games left but Lou Lamoriello went behind the bench so it wasnt a complete change
Roy sealed his fate when he said the team was unprepared before the Philly game and nervous before the Carolina game
A Song of Ice and Fired
BRING BACK THE COYOTES
I feel like NHL coaches have the shortest leashes of the big 4 sports leagues. I don't understand why fire a coach when you're in the playoffs
Love it. Serious teams that want to win NOW. no fan base can hate that. Imagine where the sharks would be if they dumped Warso after the Olympic break.
There's good reason to make a coaching change (or GM change) late in the season. They get to know the players/organization in those games — it allows them to make better decisions in the offseason. There's a lot of learning in a short amount of time. That head start for the next season is a big deal.
And congrats Brodie, on hitting the 100k mark!!
You don’t win cups with DeBoer.
This is just the VGK business model. Ownership/Managment expect to win every year. And if you aren’t producing they will move on from you .
Get the most out of both sides before the players stop listening to the coach , again.
