Pelley is a tool! SMH
At this point just rebuild it. A retool may work, but it requires a GM who’s been with the team and knows what they need, and the leafs don’t have that. Start fresh, get a brand new team with a new GM, a new coach (I love berube and don’t blame him for this teams season but gotta do what you gotta do) and stay trading everyone for top prospects and draft picks. You can get a massive haul back for Matthews if you trade him before he makes it known he wants out. You he has a NMC, but if the new GM can talk to him and have him agree to a list of teams he’s willing to go to for him to get a cup, you can get players and prospects for him. Top draft picks for Matthews with an NMC isn’t happening since he won’t go to teams that have those in abundance since they’ve been trash. The Matthews era was wasted and it hasn’t gotten them anywhere. It’s time to start thinking about the future without him because I don’t think he’ll resign with the leafs at this rate. New GM could ask around and find a team that’s willing to give major futures for him and make a trade. Leafs need to find a new core and a new way to win. Because it hasn’t worked so far

They can call it a retool but it's a rebuild no matter what they think it's a rebuild what guarantee do they have that first second liners free agents would want to play for the leafs they might get a third or fourth liner they will make a trade or two this off season next season trade deadline they make one or two trades and get a couple draft picks here and there by 2028-29 the leafs will be a different team plus Matthews and Nylander won't be a leaf forever

They HAD the assets to retool but they bungled the deadline so bad you may have to seriously look at a rebuild

The Carolina Panthers (the NFL team) hired a consulting firm at the end of their 2024 season. They were ran much better in 2025.

Send Matthews somewhere for huge haul. Move any player for picks if you can. This core clearly is rotten and it's not going to work. Try something new.

Why is nobody discussing Hayley Wickenheiser as a potential GM?
Rebuild or retool? Throw the team away. Don't even relocate you'll just curse another city. Just remove the leafs from the NHL.
So what would be the goal here with a retool? At it's peak, the core of this team could only get out of the 1st round twice in 10 years. So what is a retool going to do? More 1st round exits with the ultimate goal to get to the 2nd round and be soundly beaten again? Why retool something that is proven to have a bad foundation than just tear it down and rebuild?
Toronto also does not have the reputation a team needs to be able to rebuild. The Leafs are a clown organization right now and no FA that seriously wants to win a cup is going to waive their NTC, or sign as a FA in Toronto. You may get the guys who just want to play out the rest of their careers, make money and do their time until they are ready to retire, but that is all you are going to get. Retools are for teams like the Red Wings in the 90's and the current Colorado Avalanche who have proven track records of winning where people know the core players are winners and FA's are happy to sign there to prop the team back up into contention after a small decline. Retools are not for teams that have made complete fools of themselves over a period of 10 years. That is where you rebuild because you have no other reasonable choice. To try to retool the current Toronto Maple Leafs is delusional.
