Il est peu probable que les Capitals de Washington se qualifient pour les séries éliminatoires à trois matchs de la fin de leur saison 2025-2026. Il s’agirait de leur premier échec sous la direction de l’entraîneur-chef Spencer Carbery, après s’être faufilé en tant qu’équipe finale en 2023-2024 et avoir terminé au sommet de la Conférence Est en 2024-25.
Malgré la saison décevante, la confiance de l’organisation en Carbery n’a pas faibli. Le directeur général Chris Patrick a récemment déclaré à Pierre LeBrun de The Athletic qu’il avait toujours pleinement confiance en son entraîneur-chef.
« Il est notre entraîneur à 100 pour cent, maintenant et à l’avenir », a déclaré Patrick à LeBrun. « Je pense simplement qu’il représente l’ensemble complet. Il est arrivé et a montré, en tant qu’entraîneur pour la première fois dans la LNH, qu’il peut gagner le respect des vétérans et les amener à jouer le système qu’il veut qu’ils jouent, et il a montré qu’il peut également développer de jeunes joueurs.
Tant que nous pouvons l’avoir, nous le ferons.
Les Capitals occupent actuellement le sixième rang de la division métropolitaine et le 12e de la Conférence Est. Ils sont à trois points d’une place en séries éliminatoires et ont disputé un match de plus que les deux équipes qu’ils poursuivent, les Flyers de Philadelphie et les Sénateurs d’Ottawa.
Au cours de ses trois saisons avec les Capitals, Carbery a amassé une fiche de 131-83-29. Parmi tous les entraîneurs des Capitals, il se classe quatrième pour le pourcentage de points (.599), derrière Barry Trotz (.677), Bruce Boudreau (.672) et Todd Reirden (.642). Carbery a fait cela malgré le réoutillage et la reconstruction de l’équipe à la volée alors qu’Alex Ovechkin entrait dans le crépuscule de sa carrière.

In some sports, this is the kiss of death. My concern isn’t Carbery, it’s Patrick. I feel like next season, or more specifically this offseason, is important for him to get a lot right.

Carbs is a good dude for young Capitals. Laviolette would still play Ovi 40 min a game and would not trust young guys

Carbery is so great at creating a true meritocracy on the team. If you’re playing well, you will be rewarded with ice time. It’s so refreshing after years of Laviolette, Reirden, and Trotz, who refused to aid in the development process of players. They expected fully polished players to plug into their system. Carberry is much more flexible, and he enables true individual growth. Something this team hasn’t needed in 20 years, with Ovi carrying the load for that entire span.
Why wouldn’t he be? Gives the young guys a chance to develop, look what he did with Dubois…. I would be pissed if they let him go
He’s done well enough so far. He’s building young talent which is his MO. And it usually takes at least a year for young talent to be any good in the NHL.
It is wild to me that this even needed to be said.
Was a rilocky season with injuries and consistency. That’s not really on the coach. Just the way it goes sometimes. Love Carbs
all the losing this year wasn’t even his fault
Literally the only reason this season fell short is because we lost PLD for most of it.
Neither Strome or PLD are bonafide 1Cs. They’re both 2Cs and both are borderline 1Cs.
With PLD going down, it just put too much of the load on Strome to carry. That’s also why Strome and our powerplay regressed this year, Carbs was forced to overuse him.
The reason why Pro and McMike had career years last season is because we had Strome and PLD healthy and sharing the load the whole time and they were a balanced 1-2 punch for the top 6. We almost won a President’s Trophy with them that nobody expected!
If PLD doesn’t go down this year, we probably go into the Olympic break 2nd in the Metro and buyers at the trade deadline. Probably keep Carlson for a playoff run and likely convince Panarin that we’re a more attractive option to go for a cup this year and keep building the next years.
It really can’t be understated how much the PLD injury fucked us. Carbs did all he could with what he had.
We won a Cup with Backy and Kuzy, both were basically bonafide 1Cs at the time.
What did we really expect this year when we not only lack a bonafide 1C but we also only had 1 top 6 center like the whole year.
Just sad this season was a waste
