If we trade down a couple picks sure. I still don’t think value wise he’s better than Verhoeff and maybe even Reid. Not saying I don’t want him but just be smart about it.

If the team’s scouting staff isn’t heavily looking at at least the top 5 expected prospects they aren’t doing their jobs. I would hope that all of Malhotra, Reid, Verhoeff, Stenberg, and McKenna at minimum have had substantial scouting from the Canucks staff. it’s not like they have much else to do right now anyway

It’s doing their due diligence. He’s become the consensus best centre in the draft and a likely top 5 pick. They better be scouting him heavily

Caleb is almost the consensus first center off the board and #4/5 with verhoff at this point. It wouldnt be an insane thing to pick him at #3.

With the potential pf us moving on from Ep40, taking a center would be a no brainer in that instance. Furthermore if we are able to trade down to 5 to get Caleb and give a team their choice of Reid/Verhoff that also wouldnt be bad either. We are in the depths of a rebuild, having a 1st and 3rd might not be the worst thing even if we move from 3 to 5. We have a solid blue line and will be a part of the DuPont sweepstakes again next season.

  5. I look forward to the day when Canucks Fans are demanding Manny Malhotra be fired as Coach because he isn’t playing a 19 year old Caleb Malhotra enough.

I really like Caleb and would be fine if we took him 3OA if thats what our scouts think is the right choice. I just dont want us picking him if its just cause we have Willander and Buium.

Pretty cool, if he’s drafted he will get to play for his dad, either at the AHL level or the NHL. Hopefully the latter for both…

These Verhoeff comments are so odd. Just an FYI, rankings are not based on who has the highest ceilings as a player. This is why guys like Quinn Hughes, Cole Caufield, Lane Hutson fell.

The Habs have been pretty open about their strategy of taking swings on picks from players who are more dynamic, but may be ranked lower because of defensive issues or height/weight.

Going into the 2015 draft, every scout had Zach Werenski as the d-man with the highest ceiling, but he was always ranked 3rd among D-men in the draft as the two others were just seen as safe. A decade later, Werenski is a perennial Norris candidate and the other two are 2nd pairing guys.

We just don’t want a Cam Barker/Gudbransson situationship at #3. It’s better to weigh the options before deciding on 🤝

  10. Reid is the best d man in draft. Verhoff is the next ekblad

  11. Alleggsander

Knowing Canucks luck, there’s a good chance we don’t get that first or second and get a 3-5 overall instead. If that’s the case, I’m all on board for taking Maholtra. Kid looks fantastic

  12. Skipbrunch

If the Canucks take Ried at #3, everyone does get they will likely have to move off one of Willander, EP25, or Buium for a young forward who profiles similarly to Caleb, right?

They are not icing 4-5 d-men sub 23 d-men at once, all while having no dynamic forwards in the system

This could be an indicator of who they plan to take if/when they drop to 3rd overall.

At least they are doing their job. Scout all you can. Just hope we win the lottery.
