According to Valiquette, since the Olympic break Gibson faced the easiest environment while the Red Wings were up by a goal, and had the worst SV%.

Gibson isn’t one of those goalies that makes you go, « How did he save that?! ». Better than Talbot though, and kept the Wings in games.

  3. Are we already forgetting about how Gibson had legitimately one of the best stretches of hockey of any player all season for what seemed like months? There was Vezina talk if I remember correctly.

And then Edvinsson got hurt and our D core depth got exposed. Larkin got hurt and our C depth got exposed. Our bottom 6 was one of the worst in the league and both top lines had at least one plug in it.

It wasn’t a miracle that kept the wings towards the top for so long, it was our top players playing the best hockey they’ve ever played and a bunch of tagalongs.

  4. So this is somewhat interesting as it points against the narrative we have about the team blowing one goal leads constantly.

Structurally a .909 expected implies that we actually start defending pretty well when we get up by 1. I wonder what can be driving the difference between Gibsons actual and the teams expected in this specific state – are there types of low quality shots gibson struggles with and we can prioritize cleaning up next year? Why this specific goal state and defensive structure?

  5. This also falls into the sheer amount of starts straight for Gibson the latter half of the season. Didn’t see a lot of Talbot starting down the stretch and kept coming in for spells due to Gibson getting hurt/run.
