Another reason why there needs to be two D awards. One for best offensive defensemen and one for best overall defensemen.

While I would definitely put Seider top 5 defenseman in the league it was a very good year for defense players this year.
Those guys are all having great years as well. I’m not choosing Bouchard over Seider with my vote, but it’s not something I can be bothered by.

Not a Wings fan so not talking out of a place of bias here, but Seider had probably the best *overall* season of any Dman this year, statistically speaking. I’ll see if I can find one of the infographics I saw over the weekend. There either needs to be a split in the Norris trophy for production and being the best all-round player, or the definition needs to be clarified, because the implication made by the finalists here is that production equals your worth.
I wonder if any of those guys would be +20 on a team like the Wings.
Seider will get his respect when (if) the Wings make the playoffs. He’s the kind of two-way player whose reputation and counting stats will always be tied to the success of his team. If Detroit ever wins the cup the media will overcorrect and declare him the best player in the league overnight.

Werenski makes sense IMO but Makar being second is a joke and based on his reputation alone. The fact that Seider isn’t even in the top five for these guys and Schaefer isn’t receiving any votes just shows they only vote based on points and names.

The tradition of the writers being the ones who vote for the awards should end. It should be professional scouts making the votes – people who actually study hockey and not media hype.

I know its not how the award should work, but I think when(if) we get over the hump into the playoffs Seider will move up lists.
Same rationale suggests Dahlin will be high this year, even though both he and Mo have been playing at a high level for years regardless of team success.
Werenski doesn’t quite fit with Columbus missing playoffs, but I think voters will have some bias from the 4 Nations and Olympic performance, his goal scoring, and now he almost feels « due » with his age and performance
He was pretty bad for large chunks of the season.
Karlsson winning a few years ago really changed the meaning of the Norris Trophy.

How about we change who the voters are and make it coaches or general managers..
It’s a defensive award, so it should go to the player with the best defensive stats and such. Bogus he’s not even in the top 4, he held the team together the last month and a half.
