Sorry, but I don’t want anybody who requested out of our organization to be tasked with running it.

I think it’s a mistake to divide candidates into « analytics-heavy » and « not » buckets. We don’t really have any insight into how candidates who have not led front offices before will make decisions, and just because an executive does not have an analytics background doesn’t mean that they won’t use all of the info available to them to make decisions.
Bill Zito, for example, was not an analytics hire by any means — but he built an advanced analytics apparatus in Florida, which nobody could’ve predicted from looking at his record as a player agent or assistant GM in Columbus.
Maybe Langenbrunner wants to fill the organization with his buddies from his playing days, or maybe he wants to hire the next Eric Tulsky as his assistant and lead the Devils to the cutting edge of data-driven strategy. We really have no idea at all.
All that said, I’m skeptical of Langenbrunner because he’s been an assistant for a good team for years, he’s well connected from his days as an NHL player and his time with USA Hockey, and yet this is the first time he’s ever been connected to a GM job as far as I’m aware. If he were really such a strong candidate it’s hard to believe that his former team would be the only one interested in pursuing him.

I’m all for a room of AGMs and hopefully not a bunch of yes people. Maybe that is a better place for him off now on some team but I’m hoping to see a few experienced people enter the org who are comfortable making tough choices before it’s too late. Use your eyes and the data not just one of those things to help make decisions

I can’t wait to read the next nonsense article about Kirk Muller being the next Devils GM candidate. Every ex Devils Captain who demanded to be traded off the team should be interviewed.
