Take the top 16 and throw all the names in a BINGO tumbler. Pull out the match ups and that’s that.
When can we punt Bettman out of this league? He’s toxic at this point.
Sports fans are the biggest crybabies. 🙄
1 vs 8 just rewards a team way more for doing well. Even when they know they will qualify.
Have there been any new rivalries born during this playoff era?
Is LA – Edmonton a rivalry now? I don't remember anyone ever saying that.
Thank Gary Betman
my issue is it makes the division winners path to the cup sooo much easier. playing a wild card team then a beat up and tired division rival…. these 2v3 matchups are always brutal and long series. then they show up and play a 1 that rarely has the toughest matchup
secondly it should be 1v8,3v6 4v5,2v7 and no reseading after wins do it like a real march madness bracket
Don't any of you morons know how to pronounce kaprizov's name? Fake
Setup the bracket 1 through 8 to start and don't reseed after the first round. Why is this so hard?
There's 0% chance that Bettman listens to anyone outside his echo chamber. There's no one on Earth more in love with the smell of their own farts than Bettman.
I always pick the stars to go deep into the playoffs and am often surprised when they loose relatively early. Point being….. I’ve seen them stacked in the past and watched them choke. I feel like MN has just enough grit to win this one.
So much crying about everything
Minnesota shouldn't be on the road in the first round
I'm a huge Stars fan but between injuries and the lack of depth compared to last year 2025, this series will be over in 6 games to the Wild. Add on the aggressiveness by Minnesota that Dallas cannot match, so sorry but it isn't going to be as close as most experts think.
Stars will capitalize on a bunch of bad diving penalties, as always. That’s the only way the get out of the first round, as always.
yep sure is bullshit – 1 vs 16 was interesting back in 1981 but will settle for 1 vs 8
It’s about money…. They want Cali and northeast teams in the finals no matter what for ratings…
I miss when hockey wasnt an elitist sport for spoiled rotten punks and fanatics.
And?! The whole world is broken. Remember, at the end of the day this is just hockey so enjoy it. Much bigger problems in the world to be pissed off about the playoff format.
1 v 8 Allowed us to witness amazing upsets and creating stories that this format can't. The playoffs are so bland now
Heiskanen is questionable to start the first round and Hintz will be lucky to play at all. Normally Dallas/Otter owns Minny but with the addition of Hughes + key injuries I think this year is much different
I MISS the 1 against 8 format, there were MORE upsets because of that!
Dallas ended up 3rd overall and Minnesota 7th, framing it as if it's 2 of the top 3 teams in the league facing each other in the first round isn't accurate whatsoever. Also upsets happened all the time and what seed your team is when entering the playoffs doesn't pre determine how difficult or taxing or long the series will be.
The preemptive coping and crying is so pathetic. There is always a path for "the best" team to win, either they have what it takes to win out or they don't.
The format needs to be changed and Gary Bettman needs to go.
Been saying this for years…and said eventually you are going to get a really stupid first round and here we are. Minnesota v Dallas? Tampa v Montreal? Carolina with a VERY favourable path to conference finals vs the bloodbath in bottom half of bracket. The Metro and Pacific are an absolute joke but because of this divisional priority (which no other league does) they get a much better path to go further than teams that actually played much better in the regular season. Renders the regular season kind of irrelevant.
In a team based on "parity" – the playoffs are anything but.
Screw 1 to 8….I would go further.
1 to 16. You can keep divisions and conferences for amount of games played against each other (and travel) during regular season, but come playoffs….you go purely by the top 16 teams.
And don't start with the travel crap. Other leagues figured this out and has been used for decades in some forms.
Change 7-game format from 2-2-1-1-1 to 2-3-2. Only two trips max per series. Home ice means even more (which it should be if earned). NHL teams fly private and the longest possible flight is around 6 hours (Vancouver – Miami)….which again, is just once, and not after one game. You would play 2 games…then fly…and could have 2-day break….then play up to 3…..then possibly fly if required. Easy.
More reflective of the regular season. More reflective of the BEST teams getting down to the final 4, etc… And ultimately, more interesting matchups. This is why World Cup (soccer) so popular. You end up having a seeding system purely reflected on achievement and forgetting just geography. You get people playing each other that rarely play each other….and although there are some upsets, ultimately the best teams (France, Argentina, Brazil, England, etc…) get to the final 4 anyways…with the highest stakes seeing the best teams….not eliminated in round 1 while lesser teams get through based on divisional geography in the regular season.
You could actually have a more frequent chance of seeing interesting matchups that ultimately only are possible in cup final. You could see (for example) Montreal against Edmonton. New York against Los Angeles in an ESPN dream. Toronto vs Vegas in "Marner's Revenge" series. So acting like "divisional geography" creates rivalries is crap. There are tons of interesting matchups, and it would be a more honest playoff situation – building towards the cup.
So many years we see the toughest and most competitive rounds earlier in the playoffs, and it actually can weaken as it goes forward, leading to some sub-par finals.
I feel bad that LA has to play Colorado I wanted to see kopitar make it past round 1… but idk if that’s gonna happen now.. I’ll be rooting for LA but the reality is I doubt they will win… same thing with senators and the hurricanes. I hope the hurricanes get knocked out round one.
