Hi Gil you don't think Holstrom and Heineman are top six players legitimate second line players and I'm not just talking about on the Islanders? One scored 22 or 23 goals once basically a 20 goals or scored 19 goals and Holmstrom did that in third line minutes for almost all of the year. obviously the talent needs upgrading but I disagree with only two top six forwards.
Also I don't know that you can make the assessment that trading Barzal would be blowing up team until you know what we're getting back if it's a draft pick then yeah but that draft pick can also be ready that same year possibly if it's a higher draft pick or the year after again especially if it's a high draft pick or higher in the first round. and like you said ideally get a goal scorer and a pick but if it's just about picks we need two first rounders in the same draft if a team even has that. But if we're getting a goal score in addition or just a really solid goal scorer and a draft pick is not a part of the trade or a big part of the trade then you're not necessarily blowing up anything.
But I was thinking the exact same thing with his edges and speed and cutbacks and all that how much longer is he gonna be able to do that at the level that he's doing that right now. And I'll add something to that that if they're gonna trade them they need to do that right now because of what you mentioned maybe they have one more year after that they might get a reduced or drastically reduced return based on age and just the sheer amount of good prime years left becoming a factor and also if he starts losing some of his speed. You may have addressed the timeframe of trading him and getting a most beneficial return but I was writing this as you were talking.
I don't want him to get traded but again I can't really have an full opinion until I know what the returns likely to be or at least what's being entertained and what is possible.
Good point about his speed game and its longevity
Another great show Gil. I have been a long time everydayer but have not commented directly in a very long time. Mathew Barzal brought me back to the Isles after a long time of ambivalence. He got me to part with money, that I couldn't afford to part with, for season tickets in his first 2 years. He was great in his debut working with JT and then again with Eberle after JT left. Since then I think his offensive game (meaning goals rather than assists) has dimished some. However, I think it is much more about Lou's management of the team than Barzys talent. If he was paired correctly, as you say, with the right partner he would shine again I am sure. I even think his goals would increase becasue when he facilitate others they pay him back. I have also seen that almost every year he shows he tries to work on things to bring to the table like his back checking, takeaways, and drawing penalties. What I believe will happen is that if he is dealt he likely gets matched with the right partner(s) and makes the Isles look stupid. If he goes I will go with him because I see the team as more to blame for wasting his talent more than him not rising to it.
No brainer to trade Him and target a 1st this Year and more if You can get it and not resign Lee, Darche really kneecapped this Team with His absolutely horrendous in Season trades, Him trading away the 2nd 1st while taking on salary for Schenn and the Soucy and Palat trades were grounds for termination bad
They should definitely explore the possibility and see what he could bring back, but there are other things that should be done. Let Lee walk. Buy out Mayfield. Try to move Pulock and/or Pelech. Be careful, as we’ve learned from the idiot David Stearns, moving out core players just to change the chemistry can make things worse. Don’t want to throw the baby out with the bathwater
Gil Barzy admitted that he was not fully healthy. I knew he wasn’t right. He said it can take 2 years to cone back from that injury. I’m thinking can we see how it goes this year? We need our home grown players!
I would trade Barzal tomorrow. Vastly overrated.
This is how utterly STUPID the NYIs Management is. TRADING ONE OF OUR BEST PLAYERS INSTEAD OF THE DEAD WEIGHT PYLONS INFESTING THE ROSTER!!! Barzy NEEDS SKILLED LINEMATES!! He's the only one (other than Scheaf) who has puck moving abilities!! Opposing teams know 13 is on an Island by himself so teams double 13 up! All those idiots wanting to trade 13 are too stupid to realize that we'll get nothing close to fair market value in return!!
Gil my friend, I know you have to be "politically correct" and level headed during the show. But, as soon as you're off air, you're just as unhinged and pissed off as I am… and many others as well! I know this because you wrote a book on this franchise!!!!
Barzy for Brady Tkcuck who wants out of Ott
How is this gonna work: Barzy, Horvat, Ritchie, Pageau, Czikas all stated centers. Schenn guess will be on wing & 53 gets traded. Is Pageau the 4th C?
One question Matt Barzel does not make anyone better. He's a very good player, but not a elite player. he makes too much money for a player that doesn't carry this team. 2 goals on the power play & 19 goals in a 82 game schedule is not good enough . You can't tell me that he's been that great of a player.
Sorokin ABSOLUTELY deserves to win the Vezina. What he did all season kept us firmly in a playoff position. He played lights out until Darche sabotaged this roster forcing Sorokin to elevate his game to nothing less than a .999 GaAvg performance! That's freaking impossible!!! The guy gets peppered all season, 50 games played for Sorokin feels more like 60-65! Vasilefsky has never faced seasons like that!!! Seriously, look at everything not just a few stat numbers!
A Matthew Barzal trade would be a transaction with a lot of moving parts and could involve more than one team, trades like these often have more than two parties, so that makes it even more unlikely to happen given Mathieu Darche's extremely limited skill set. Ownership is already battling their growing image of ineptitude, the last thing they need is to allow their trainee to make a deal where an asset with significant value gets moved for the hockey equivalent of a handful of magic beans. Forget It.
Make Barzal available. Let’s see what happens
i'd move 13 right now for a package of futures including a g scorer. maybe darche can make an 8 type of deal and get two firsts and prospect for 13? is $9.5 mil. for 13 who has hit ppg only twice in 9 seasons, didn't score 20 g's, and can't ignite isle pp while dancing on ice really worth it? could move 13 while in his prime and get some cap relief.
it would have to be a deal with a team with draft capital and prospect line. sj, hawks, flames, wings, mammoth, habs, kraken, preds have the top systems. maybe kraken would like to bring 13 back to where he played whl and closer to western canada home. maybe hawks would like a buddy for bedard? maybe sj would trade misa, cherbyshov, first for 13? HAHAHA. isles need futures while trying to not re-build. 13 could be their best chip to get futures outside of moving 30 which isn't happening.
